In my practice, I invoke the ad hoc as a profound form of parasitical resistanceâan act of subversion against the engineered, hegemonic forces that seek to colonize perception, discourse, and ultimately, consciousness itself. This approach recognizes that these dominant systemsâentrenched within neoliberal architectures, technological infrastructures, and ideological narratives operate through superficial immediacy, targeting primal urges and surface-level effects to maintain control. By embracing spontaneous, impromptu methodologies rooted in the ad hoc, I reappropriate this superficiality, transforming fleeting effects into fertile sites for deeper reflection, collective awakening, and critical engagement.
This parasitical stance involves a deliberate infiltration into the space of hegemonic narratives, akin to a living parasite adapting from within. Instead of outright rejection, this process involves a strategic and creative symbiosis transforming the very mechanisms of control into portals for alternative perception. Through the creation of hybrid objects and ephemeral spaces, I challenge conventional notions of linear timelines and fixed meanings, emphasizing fluidity, divergence, and emergence. These artifacts act as luminous portals interstitial spaces where time becomes a malleable substance, and perception blooms into luminous potentiality. They serve as sites of resistance that trap and refract time, revealing the porous boundaries between past, present, and future, as well as between individual and collective consciousness.

Amid the current ecological crisis, artistic poetics functions as a vital modality for re-synthesizing human and planetary identities. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and the cosmic interconnectedness of ecological systems demand a poetic responseâa form of redreaming that reimagines our collective relationship with Earth.

In the intricate dance of Redreaming Technics, where ecology intertwines with economics, the process channels the philosophies of psychohistory and biology, serving as a mirror to inner consciousness akin to the evolution of life itselfâa perpetual emergence, divergence, and convergence of ideas. This narrative embodies an unforeseen confluence of logics, weaving together diverse materials rather than creating anew. As I gaze inward, confronting my own biases and grieving the loss of friends, freedom, and the profound impacts of anthropogenic factors, this introspective journey becomes part of the tapestry.
The use of *ad hoc* as an aesthetic and process reflects an intuition towards the immediate effect that rules our primordial sensesâthose primal urges pushed by the clever engineering of the Neo-liberal monster. I am subverting it, or in other words, reclaiming it from the colonisers to craft a perception that âmakes doâ with the emergent, the convergent, and the divergentâconfiguring hybrid objects as portals of consciousness that trap time and where light blooms out of. This act of reappropriation transforms fleeting impulses into enduring artifacts, cultivating spaces where perception is fluid, collective consciousness is sparked, and the boundaries of time dissolve into luminous potentiality. #contemplating #contemporaryart #existentialism #tropical #southeastasia #anthropocène #redreamingtechnics #jamesly

CCA OpenLab 06: Machine Fictioning, AI, and Tropics Futurism
Date: May 27, 2025
Time: 12:00 PM â 2:00 PM
Venue: CCA Lab
For this session we provide a fascinating exploration of art made from the intersection of technology, history, and future imaginaries rooted in tropical and post-colonial contexts. CCA OpenLab 06, host artist Eddie Wong as he presents his innovative exploration of archival narratives, memory, and speculative futures through the lens of artificial intelligence. As a Malaysian computational artist, Wong leverages AI, durational media, and interactive installations to craft counter-archives that unsettle dominant histories and reveal archival silences shaped by colonial legacies. His talk will focus on *machine fictioning*, a process he uses to generate speculative narratives from fragmented family histories, particularly around themes like identity, erasure, and tropical futurism. Wongâs recent work, including the acclaimed AI film *Portrait of the Jungle People*, exemplifies how machine learning can deconstruct and reimagine collective memories and histories. This session offers an insightful look into his artistic practice and his upcoming research trip to Sarawak, exploring oral histories within Bornean contexts. Dive into discussions on AI, colonial histories, and the future imaginaries of tropical regions.

The properties of the sublime belong to the matter of art itself - that is so that the task specific to art of the sublime is to approach matter, to approach presence without having recourse to representation. In a word the point is to approach matter in its alterity. The art of the sublime is art responding to the alterity of matter. Musings on Speculative Ecologies and the Multipolar TapestryââââââââââââââââThese modalities do not merely represent ideas; they embody a process of becomingâa continuously shifting ecology where the tangible and the digital, the human and the non-human, the material and the immaterial collide and coalesce. This hybrid landscape serves as a speculative space where the boundaries between life, matter, and machine dissolve under the weight of their own entanglements.Through âRedreaming Technicsâ, I want to provoke a reconsideration of our relationship to the non-human, to technological detritus, and to the computational landscapes that shape our realities. By merging these with poetic and disquieting aesthetics, I aim to articulate a theory of relational beingâone that stretches across the cosmos, psyche, and society. My work asks: How might we rethink value, production, and reproduction in an age where our embeddedness within planetary systems becomes ever more apparent? This speculative dreamworld is not an escape. It is a confrontationâa space for improvisation, where I invite you to dwell in the liminal, to embrace uncertainty, and to imagine futures hidden within the fractures of the present. I donât seek to provide answers but to open a dialogue, one that challenges us to rethink how we inhabit and create meaning in a world shaped by the convergence of life, matter, and machine. In these fractured yet beautiful dreamscapes, I want to offer an invitation: to sense the world anew, to speculate freely, and to imagine precarious yet profound futures. Through this, âRedreaming Technicsâ becomes a space for reimagining our place within the tangled realities of our timeâa space where, together, we might discover new old ways of being. - James Ly
CCA OpenLab 2025 2.0 â Panel Talk with Andy Waumanâ¨March 5, 2025 | 10 AM â 12 PMâ¨Venue: CCA Lab
Moderated by James Ly
CCA OpenLab is excited to welcome Andy Wauman, a professional new media artist and founder of the collective Copyplanet, for our second panel talk of the year. Known for his poetic yet rebellious approach, Wauman has transitioned from contemporary art into new media, continuously pushing the boundaries of expression.
In this session, Wauman will share insights into his evolving practice, focusing on how his work emerges not from art-historical or theoretical frameworks, but from personal protest and social principles. His art transforms everyday materials and symbols into powerful statements, reclaiming their lost poetic essence.
Wauman has exhibited internationally, with solo shows at Deweer Gallery (2006, 2009, 2012, 2016), Art Statements Gallery in Tokyo and Hong Kong, and Bourouina Gallery in Berlin. His work has also been featured in The Underground School of Contemporary Art (Antwerp, 2016), Winter Harvest (Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, 2017), and Het Vlot. Art is (not) lonely (Mu.ZEE, 2017). His 2018 exhibition In Defence of Poetry in Malaysia reflected his commitment to art as a form of resistance.
This talk is especially relevant for staff and researchers in CCA, FCM, and FCA, offering a deep dive into Waumanâs unique artistic philosophy. Join us for an engaging discussion on art, protest, and the ever-changing landscape of new media.
