‘Here’s something I bet you didn’t know about toilet paper.’ 🧻
Tim Minshall, author of Your Life is Manufactured, explains why a single piece of toilet paper comes from different corners of the globe.
We live in a manufactured world, where a nearly invisible, awe-inspiring global system enables virtually every aspect of our existence. But how often do we stop to think: where do all the things surrounding us right now actually come from?
Your Life is Manufactured is a wonderfully illuminating journey through how we make things, why it matters and how we can do it better.

Thanks @cambschamber for inviting me to join this really interesting and timely debate.
My slightly-biased-towards-manufacturing arguments were that, despite some very clear structural as well as immediate challenges, the UK has:
1. Superb people - in science and technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, and ‘solving messy problems’ (example: Covid-19 Ventilator Challenge).
2. Unique resources - our underlying strengths in finance (especially VC), legal (commercial and IP), digital infrastructure (yes, we are not at the level of Singapore or South Korea, but it is still remarkably good), with future framing provided by the existence of an industrial strategy (but, yes, we still need to see more detail and speed on the delivery).
3. Sector strengths - from #healthcare (pharma, biotech, medical devices, healthtech), #aerospace (both the ‘aero’ AND ‘space’), #automotive (including phenomenal strengths in motorsport - think: most #F1 teams base their engineering in the UK for a reason), and #defence. These - and others - provide the UK with a powerful collective set of ‘industrial commons’ (clustered combinations of skilled people and sophisticated supply chains)
