‘Here’s something I bet you didn’t know about toilet paper.’ 🧻 Tim Minshall, author of Your Life is Manufactured, explains why a single piece of toilet paper comes from different corners of the globe. We live in a manufactured world, where a nearly invisible, awe-inspiring global system enables virtually every aspect of our existence. But how often do we stop to think: where do all the things surrounding us right now actually come from? Your Life is Manufactured is a wonderfully illuminating journey through how we make things, why it matters and how we can do it better. ‘If Douglas Adams had decided to write about factories.’ Dr Elliott Grant ‘An extraordinarily good read.’ Professor David Spiegelhalter ‘Like being given a personal tour of the world’s factories by a real-life Willy Wonka.’ Dr Anna Ploszajski Out 13 February in hardback, ebook and audio. #howsitmade #insidethefactory #nonfiction

📚How is a book made? 📚 We went to the printers with Tim Minshall, author of Your Life is Manufactured, to watch his book turn from rolls of blank paper to the finished product. Here’s a one minute recap. We live in a manufactured world. But how often do we stop to think about how all the things we use every day are made, or how they get to us? Your Life is Manufactured by @minshalltim_work is a mindboggling journey through the world of manufacturing: how things are made and how we can do it better. Out on 13 February in hardback, ebook and audio. Thanks to @cpi.group for the behind the scenes tour 🖨

Click! Billions of cups of tea and coffee are made in a kettle every single day. But how does the switch know when to turn off? Tim Minshall, author of Your Life is Manufactured gives us a whistle-stop tour of the inside of a kettle ☕️ ‘Mind-boggling... I won’t look at my kettle the same way again.’ Zoe Laughlin, Presenter of BBC Four’s How to Make ‘An extraordinarily good read… It also made me laugh out loud.’ Professor David Spiegelhalter, author of The Art of Statistics We live in a manufactured world. Unless you are floating naked through space, you are right now in direct contact with multiple manufactured products. How often do we stop to think: where do the things we buy actually come from? Your Life is Manufactured is a wonderfully illuminating journey through how we make things, why it matters and how we can do it better. Out on 13 February in hardback, ebook and audio.

Thanks @cambschamber for inviting me to join this really interesting and timely debate. My slightly-biased-towards-manufacturing arguments were that, despite some very clear structural as well as immediate challenges, the UK has: 1. Superb people - in science and technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, and ‘solving messy problems’ (example: Covid-19 Ventilator Challenge). 2. Unique resources - our underlying strengths in finance (especially VC), legal (commercial and IP), digital infrastructure (yes, we are not at the level of Singapore or South Korea, but it is still remarkably good), with future framing provided by the existence of an industrial strategy (but, yes, we still need to see more detail and speed on the delivery). 3. Sector strengths - from #healthcare (pharma, biotech, medical devices, healthtech), #aerospace (both the ‘aero’ AND ‘space’), #automotive (including phenomenal strengths in motorsport - think: most #F1 teams base their engineering in the UK for a reason), and #defence. These - and others - provide the UK with a powerful collective set of ‘industrial commons’ (clustered combinations of skilled people and sophisticated supply chains)
