“ Ladle Hat “— Design Note
Meyer & Welch’s Ladle Hat draws inspiration from rubberized hats with ear flaps seen in France and the UK.
With its elongated back brim, it carries a quiet, beautiful presence—designed to function in rain and wind, while remaining understated in appearance.
The original vintage pieces adopt a Center Seam Crown pattern, a construction that naturally holds a classic and balanced silhouette.
However, these hats were designed to sit on the head mainly through their own weight, and were secured by tying the chin strap extended from the ear flaps to prevent them from being blown away by strong wind.
They were not originally made to provide a fitted feel through the hat’s structure itself.
With Meyer & Welch, we chose to honor that traditional framework while adding the comfort required for modern daily use.
For this reason, the Ladle Hat was designed with a fully lined construction.
The outer shell follows the same approach as the vintage source, using a Center Seam Crown pattern.
Meanwhile, the inner lining is built with a radial panel structure (a six-panel, multi-piece construction).
This dual structure—classic on the outside, sculpted on the inside—preserves the traditional character of the hat while enhancing three-dimensional form, allowing it to fit naturally and comfortably along the head.
In addition, we utilize the material’s elasticity and incorporate an adjustment function behind the sweatband.
By doing so, we retain the vintage rationality and quiet beauty, while integrating Meyer & Welch’s own philosophy of functionality through wearability.
The Ladle Hat is not a simple reproduction of the past.
It is Meyer & Welch’s proposal—built upon a deep understanding of classic design, updated with the comfort that matters today.

Our luggage product “Boulanger Sling” features the original closure structure:
LUG System™ (Look Up Closer & Go).
This system is designed to work with a simple, natural motion—
as you lift the bag, the strap rises and the opening closes automatically.
The name “Look Up Closer & Go” reflects both its function—closing securely—and the comfort of being ready to leave immediately.
Unlike typical drawstring or cinch-bag structures, the opening and closing can be completed with a smooth, streamlined gesture. The mechanism is fully integrated into the design itself, achieving a high level of refinement in both appearance and functionality.
Our focus was simple:
how can we remove an everyday extra step—while maintaining security—without creating any sense of awkwardness?
This product is the result of that idea.
We would love for you to pick it up and try it for yourself.

“ Lutra Jacket “— Design Notes
Lutra Jacket draws its roots from French vintage hunting jackets, reinterpreting their culture and function to suit modern life.
Shawl-collar hunting wear originates from garments worn by hunters in early 20th-century France, built to withstand harsh natural environments.
The rounded collar was designed to guide wind away while softly wrapping the neck, and the double-breasted construction served as a practical barrier against cold air.
What makes this category so compelling is that these purely functional details, over time, came to embody a distinct elegance.
At Meyer & Welch, we honor that heritage while refining it into a form of “quiet rationality” suited for today’s wardrobe.
The shawl collar creates a natural shadow around the neckline.
The double-breasted buttons have been simplified and consolidated by removing one side, and the front is finished with a fly placket—minimizing decoration while achieving a clean, continuous presence, as if formed from a single uninterrupted piece of cloth.
Key hunting-born functions remain intact: large flap pockets, cuff straps, and sleeves designed with a subtle forward pitch.
By rebalancing the lines, thickness, and proportions, we shaped a jacket with a restrained expression—one that feels natural both in the outdoors and in the city.
The shawl collar itself has also been carried through history in French naval coats and British officers’ cold-weather garments, standing in the space between utility and dignity.
Lutra Jacket quietly contains both hunting and military lineages, reinterpreted as a modern hunting jacket made to live effortlessly in everyday life.

“ Mondon Cape Coat “ — Design Notes
Mondon Cape Coat is a redesigned interpretation of the U.S. military post-war extreme cold weather coat, the N-3.
While respecting the original N-3’s rugged, utilitarian character, we combined modern-day functionality with Meyer & Welch’s quiet sense of refinement—creating a new approach to layering outerwear.
⸻
Fabric — 100% Cotton, Naturally Water-Resistant
The fabric is 100% cotton.
Woven at an extremely high density, it offers reliable water resistance without relying on heavy coatings.
This choice reflects Meyer & Welch’s concept:
“Any weather, No glum mood.”
⸻
Structure — Solid, Simple, Rational
Staying true to the N-3’s minimal construction, the coat features: • A clean front with no chest pockets • Large patch pockets on both sides
As the N-3 series evolved, later versions became more complex and leaned toward synthetic materials.
Mondon Cape Coat returns to the solid simplicity of the original—refined for everyday life.
⸻
Collar & Closure
Instead of the iconic oversized hood, we rebuilt the design into a large stand collar, fitted with a chin strap and collar strap for flexible adjustment.
To avoid long-term failure from zipper damage, the front closure is button-only, allowing easy control over warmth and airflow.
⸻
Conclusion
Mondon Cape Coat inherits the structural strength of the N-3, reinterpreted through Meyer & Welch’s values of quietness, rational design, and adaptable comfort—built to support daily life in all weather, without excess.

"Phoca Shell Coat " — Design Notes
Phoca Shell Coat is a piece that quietly embeds the functionality required for modern life within the timeless framework of a classic soutien collar coat.
The soutien collar coat is known as a universal outerwear archetype, refined and completed around the mid-20th century.
Less military than a trench coat, yet less formal than a Chesterfield, it has long been loved as an “everyday outer”—one that naturally blends into both the city and the outdoors, living in a gentle space between the two.
While respecting this enduring character, the Phoca Shell Coat features a wind-guard flap layered over the right shoulder.
This detail originates from practical structures found in older military coats—designed to prevent cold air from entering through the shoulder during travel by motorcycle or bicycle, or on days of strong wind and rain.
We have quietly reconstructed it through the sensibility of Meyer & Welch, ensuring it never becomes overly decorative.
The subtle shadow and dimension created by the flap add a restrained yet distinct expression to the coat as a whole.
Behind the flap, we have also placed a concealed pocket.
The intention is to integrate practicality without disrupting the silhouette—
to avoid increasing visible details, while still adding function where it truly matters.
The front is kept minimal, and the straight, natural lines falling toward the hem, along with the smooth connection from shoulder to sleeve, preserve the dignity of a classic outerwear piece.
Phoca Shell Coat is designed with the idea of carefully layering “quiet rationality.”
It is made to adapt to any weather, to feel natural at any time of day, and to support everyday life without ever getting in the way—simply, reliably, and with calm presence.
