A year ago today, the Xinka Indigenous people of Guatemala denied consent for the reopening of Canadian company Pan-American Silver's Escobal mine. Now, MP and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May @elizabethemay has formally tabled a petition in parliament demanding that the Xinka people's decision be respected! The petitioners are asking the government of Canada to: 1️⃣ Reaffirm the Xinka people’s right to free, prior, and informed consent 2️⃣ Take action to protect Xinka defenders and ensure their safety and security.

⚠️Torngat’s mining project is an unacceptable violation of Innuat’s sovereignty over the Nitassinan⚠️ It is also a violation of the integrity of all future generations. A group of concerned environmental organizations including MiningWatch Canada, @oceans_north and @greenpeace_canada sent a letter to Prime Minister Carney urging his government to take decisive action to protect the international seabed and uphold the UN Convention on the Law of the Seas. A subsidiary (TMC-USA) of a Canadian mining company, The Metals Company, is seeking to bypass international law to mine the deep seabed. The signatories are demanding that the government publicly denounce these efforts and protect the ocean environment. Une filiale (TMC-USA) d’une société minière canadienne, The Metals Company, cherche à contourner le droit international pour exploiter les fonds marins profonds. The opposition to C-5 is growing. Today, 11 environmental, scientific, and human rights organizations from across Canada are asking to intervene in the CQDE’s legal challenge against C-5. This law, passed under closure, raises significant concerns regarding compliance with laws, particularly environmental laws, and the scope of powers granted to the federal government. Our goal: to ensure that the courts hear our concerns and assess the full scope of this law’s consequences. #BillC5 #polcan

Mining Watch Canada has signed onto an open statement alongside over 300+ civil society organisations calling on governments around the world to build a coalition to “free themselves” from a little-known international system of secretive tribunals called ISDS. Canadian mining companies have a massive ISDS footprint in Latin America, using secretive tribunals to sue governments outside national legal systems. These mechanisms are profoundly undemocratic, constraining and undermining sovereignty and the right to self-determination. Read the full statement at the link in bio!

Over 340 civil society organisations have signed an open statement calling on governments around the world to build a coalition to “free themselves” from a little-known international system of secretive tribunals. Published ahead of the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels, taking place in Colombia at the end of April, the statement says this system, formally known as investor-state dispute settlement or ISDS, “threatens a just transition from fossil fuels and the urgent need for a social and ecological transformation for people and the planet.”
