CHAPTER ONE : FOUNDATIONS
As FOUNDATIONS has come to a close I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you.
9,000 people visited @new_art_exchange to experience the first chapter of Our Yard and seeing that level of connection to the work has been incredibly powerful.
This exhibition was created as a love letter to Nottingham’s Caribbean community. To the people, the sounds, the stories, the dances, the systems, the record shops, the conversations and the generations that helped shape the city I grew up in.
So much of this culture has influenced British life in profound ways yet the people and stories behind it are rarely documented, preserved or centred in the way they deserve.
FOUNDATIONS was my attempt to help change that and create something that honoured the elders and pioneers who laid the groundwork.
Seeing people walk through the space with emotion, recognition, pride and curiosity reminded me exactly why this work matters. Watching elders feel seen and celebrated while younger people discovered these histories for the first time is something I’ll carry with me forever.
Thank you to every contributor, interviewee, selector, artist, my wife, NAE and all the visitors who became part of this journey. This project was built collectively and could never have existed without community.
I started this project because I wanted younger generations including my own children to understand whose shoulders they stand on and the culture that helped shape the world around them.
As I now take a small step back to focus on starting a family and entering a new chapter personally that feeling sits with me even more deeply. It reminds me why preserving these stories matters.
I feel incredibly grateful for what this first chapter of Our Yard has become. This is only the beginning.

We’re hosting our second instalment of med minds: a listen & paint special for the curious, an afternoon of relaxed painting and drawing. All welcome.
We’ll be listening to one of Spain’s most celebrated singers and performers, Rosario. Known for her powerful voice and immersive penchant storytelling with a career spanning both music and film. We’ll be spinning Rosario’s acclaimed albums such as De Ley, Siento, and Muchas Flores.

🎶 CAPTAIN BARKEY SELECTS 🎶
Captain Barkey - a respected selector, MC and former resident on Heatwave Radio helped shape the sound of Nottingham’s airwaves and dances throughout the 80s and 90s.
Known for his deep musical knowledge and connection to community, his vinyl collection carries decades of listening, exchange and lived experience.
For this listening station, a selection from his personal archive has been curated by his son, Meshach Carthy @younastyson bringing together family, friendship and shared musical heritage.
These records trace a lineage of sound showing how taste, memory and culture are passed from one generation to the next through listening.
Big shouts to Maxine, Captain Barkey ( @davidcarthy1 ) and Meshach the creators of the centrepiece and heartbeat of the Foundations exhibition.

As we draw to the closing of our exhibition we are screening a landmark of Black British cinema, Babylon (1980) follows the story of Blue, a young reggae DJ navigating the pressures of racism, policing and everyday survival in South London. Directed by Franco Rosso and featuring a legendary soundtrack led by Dennis Bovell, the film captures the tension, creativity and cultural power of the Sound System scene at a pivotal moment in UK history. Raw, urgent and still strikingly relevant, Babylon remains a defining portrait of resistance and community.

We are looking for 18-25-year-olds, living in Nottingham, who would like to apply to our upcoming ‘Behind the Scenes’ program, which will join the wider national Youth Music Industry Connect Coalition
‘The Industry Connect Coalition’ is a collaborative initiative that brings together key players across the creative industries to drive long-term change. The Coalition aims to break down barriers to entry in the music and wider creative industries, creating more accessible, inclusive, and sustainable career pathways for young people from underrepresented backgrounds.
Focusing on local music industry career pathways, our program will offer successful applicants the opportunity to access music mentorship, attend work-experience placements and realise their own funded projects.
