OFFICIAL CLARIFICATION: Managing Bulk Fuel Purchases & Security of Supply
The Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy (MIME) has heard the concerns regarding recent temporary measures to curb fuel hoarding and panic buying.
The Ministry acknowledges that many Namibians require bulk fuel (drums and jerry cans) for legitimate farming, business, and operational activities. Therefore, the Minister has issued the following directives.
These measures are temporary (introduced for a three-month period) to prevent fuel hoarding and ensure that supply remains stable for all Namibians.
We urge all fuel wholesalers and retailers to educate their customers on these directives and support fellow Namibians truly in need of bulk fuel for their operations.

Today, 6 May 2026, the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy hosted an information-sharing session in collaboration with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) on the upcoming Integrated Field Exercise 2026 (IFE26) in its auditorium.
The session brought together staff members to enhance understanding of Namibia’s role in hosting one of the most significant international exercises in nuclear non-proliferation. The presentations highlighted the importance of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which prohibits nuclear explosions globally. Namibia signed the treaty in 1996 and ratified it in 2001, reaffirming its commitment to global peace and security.
The IFE26 exercise is scheduled to take place from 5 October to 20 November 2026 in the Erongo Region, specifically in the coastal towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.
Notably, this will be the first time the Integrated Field Exercise is held in Africa, following previous exercises in Kazakhstan in 2008 and Jordan in 2014.
The exercise is a large-scale simulation designed to test inspection methodologies, operational readiness, and technical capabilities under the CTBT verification regime, including systems such as the International Monitoring System and on-site inspections.
The engagement marks a key milestone in Namibia’s preparations, reinforcing the country’s commitment to international cooperation, nuclear non-proliferation, and global peace and security.

Regional Energy Cooperation
Following Cabinet’s approval in February 2026, the Angola–Namibia (ANNA) Interconnection Project has taken a significant step forward, marked by the signing of legal documents today in Luanda, Angola. This landmark moment reaffirms the shared commitment between Namibia and Angola to strengthen energy security and deepen regional integration.
Approved as a strategic infrastructure investment by the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy (MIME) and implemented through Rede Nacional de Transporte de Electricidate (RNT) and NamPower, the ANNA Project will deliver a 400kV, 362km transmission line connecting the two countries. Routed via the proposed Baynes Hydropower Plant in the Lower Kunene, the project will ease power supply constraints and strengthen the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).
Delivering the statement on behalf of the Namibian Government was Modestus Amutse, Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, who noted:
"For Namibia, this initiative is vital in meeting growing energy demand by ensuring a reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity supply. It will diversify the country’s energy mix, reduce supply risks, and support long-term economic growth.
At the same time, the project enables Angola to maximise its significant generation capacity, particularly from renewable and hydro resources, for the benefit of the region. The ANNA Project stands as a true example of mutual benefit and shared prosperity."
