Happy International Mother Language Day. I filmed this during a visit to my dada bari a while ago, but never got around to posting it. The poem in the background, Abar Ashibo Phire by Jibanananda Das, whose home sits just down the river from ours, felt perfectly fitting. In these lines, he writes a love for this land that feels deeply familiar—his words about returning mirrored my own return to my roots, to the rivers, fields, and memories that shaped me.

This is a piece I translated a while back written by one of my favorite Bengali poets, Asad Chowdhury, who recently passed away. In this poem Chowdhury writes to Barbara Beidler, who in 1966 wrote a poem for a magazine expressing her disapproval for the war in Vietnam (5th slide). The poem gained attention when the US Department of Defense dropped 13000 subscriptions of the magazine from its military bases. But the courage and humanity of this child was celebrated throughout the country. She was seen as a hero for speaking up and raising awareness. Six years later, Chowdhury waited for her to speak up again against the American-backed genocide taking place in his own country, but he had yet to hear from her. So he wrote to her instead wondering what is stopping her from speaking up again. Crazy to see how a lot of things never change.

In honor of Ekushey February I wanted to share this poem I translated written by Abu Zafar Obaidullah. February 21 is recognized by the United Nations as International Mother Language Day, a day observing and promoting the linguistic and cultural diversity of the world we live in today. This day however is rooted in the events of February 21, 1952,. On this day Abdus Salam, Abul Barkat, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed, among other university students came together in a public protest to communicate their desire to speak in the language that they had grown up with. These students were shot and killed outside Dhaka University for protesting for the recognition of Bangla as an official state language of Pakistan. Their struggle highlighted the significance of Bangla, its importance in determining our ethnic and cultural identity, and eventually led to the independence of Bangladesh
