We have broken ground and started laying block on our new Sugar Shaq (yes, Sugar Shaq. Maple producers call their production facilities a sugar shack but we are different and love Shaq).
We applied for and received a RFSI (Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure) grant from the USDA to make this construction possible. Our original Sugar Shaq was 340 feet and we quickly outgrew it. Our new Sugar Shaq will be 2,200 sq feet and will be a game changer for us from a production standpoint. All of our equipment will be in one place and will allow for uniform-efficient workflows with floor drains for easy cleanup with sticky situations. Special thanks to my Dad, Mike Milligan, for designing and lining up all of the contractors and overseeing the project. We are hiring all local contractors in the Athens area to help support the local economy.
We will be expanding our tap count and will be able to host private tours of our operation. Our old Sugar Shaq will house a lot of our production supplies and will continue to support the operation. We couldn’t be more excited and our fingers are crossed we will be making syrup in the new Sugar Shaq next year. More updates to come!

The production season for each of our three farms has ended. The season didn’t go as well as we had hoped at our Athens farm (it was great while it lasted-we had a great yield for 2 week and then it got too warm). We were just fine that the season ended early, because we are set to build a new sugar shack (production facility) through the USDA’s Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure program.
We have started leveling and preparing the site where we will build our new facility. We will using all local contractors in southeast Ohio for this project. Our current facility is 340 square feet and our new facility will be 2,200 sq feet with a loft. This will be a game changer for our operation ensuring all of our equipment will be under one roof and we will have concrete floors and floor drains to deal with sticky situations!

We have fully tapped our sugarbush and are ready to make our famous pure maple syrup! Of course there were all sorts of unique challenges getting everything up and ready this year. From a landslide in the fall (yes, you read that right. A ducking landslide) that wiped out dozens of large maple trees to wind storms causing damage to limbs and trees to extreme cold-snow making it very slow moving out in the woods tapping our trees.
Tapping our entire sugarbush (which is a team effort now thankfully) is equivalent to climbing over 1,000 floors and walking 50+ miles (uphill both way!!!! 🤪😂🍁👍).
