In West Oakland, a new 100% affordable family housing development is underway. Our design work began in 2014, and the project sponsor, East Bay Asian Development Corporation (EBALDC), has persevered and financially spearheaded the development. Anticipated completion is mid-2025. Working closely with Pyatok Architects and Branagh Construction, our designs focus on the shared community courtyard, offering spaces for children’s play and family gatherings, as well as enhancements to the surrounding city streetscapes.
We are pleased to have designed the landscape for the new 98-unit affordable senior housing development taking shape on Geary Boulevard in San Francisco. Sponsored by the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, we have been working closely with YA Studio on the design and Nibbi Construction on the execution of the plan. Our design for the ground-level courtyard extends the activity of the building’s community room into the landscape. The rooftop terrace provides expansive views of the Presidio and the Pacific Ocean within a verdant setting for resident gatherings. Completion of the project is anticipated in the first quarter of 2025.
The new waterfront Chain Basin Park is now open and filled with activity. Miller Company, acting as the local landscape architect, provided planting and irrigation design for the park in a coordinated effort with SCAPE Landscape Architecture and a large team of technical consultants. The park’s elevation was raised 6 feet above its former topographic point to protect the facility from anticipated sea level rise. The five-acre park is a technical feat of creativity, incorporating the use of lightweight concrete, foam blocks, and sand-based structural soil underlying the entire area. Extensive planting of native and adapted trees and understory are woven into the overall design, providing unique character and resilience to the park’s magnificent location. Jeffrey Miller recently led a tour of the park, sponsored by the local AIA chapter.
Miller Company has designed and built a new parklet as part of the Golden Gate Greenway project. The project is creating a pedestrian corridor between Jones and Leavenworth Streets in the Tenderloin. The non-commercial parklet is an 80-foot-long extension of the sidewalk. The design features three separate, finely crafted u-shaped gathering areas, offering residents a place to come together, surrounded by colorful, drought-tolerant plantings. Miller fabricated the project components in the company’s shop and installed the parklet on the street, with interested neighbors looking on. Saint Anthony’s Foundation has sponsored and is facilitating the block-long project, bringing dignity and respect to the community. Miller’s design required review and approval from the San Francisco Planning Department.
Miller Company is providing landscape architecture design for San Francisco’s first new elementary school in the thriving Mission Bay community. Working closely with DLR Architects and McCarthy Construction, the project is currently taking shape. The school’s site will feature a state-of-the-art playground, a learning garden, outdoor classrooms, eating areas, and two separate preschool play areas. Native plantings, nature exploration, and stormwater capture are integrated into the project design. The recent groundbreaking, attended by local city leaders, celebrated the new school, which is scheduled to open in 2025. We are excited to be a part of this important project!
After years of working with the community on the design of a new playground at Stern Grove, we recently celebrated the groundbreaking to kick off the construction phase. The playground is located west of the main Stern Grove entrance on Sloat Boulevard. It features three rustic play towers, swings, slides, tunnels, and several climbing apparatuses surrounded by natural boulders, all set within the park’s forest. A new boardwalk creates an accessible entry path to the playground and provides amphitheater seating overlooking the extensive renovation of the adjacent putting green lawn. Anticipated completion of the project is in mid-2025.
The public is invited to celebrate the Dahlia Garden this Sunday, August 4 at 11AM. The new hillside garden is located in the San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park adjacent to the Conservatory of Flowers. The celebration will include tours and a celebration of the new hillside garden designed by Miller Company. Working closely with the volunteer gardeners and SFRPD staff our team’s design has transformed a dilapidated area into a beautiful terrace garden foregrounded by a new accessible walkway and stone sitting wall. The official San Francisco flowers are in full bloom now at the Dahlia Garden.

Small Press Traffic, a local literary institution dating back to 1974, launched a newish platform called “The Back Room” in 2022 which highlights projects and people who have made––and continue to make––the Bay Area a vibrant artistic scene. Jeffrey Miller and his wife (and painter) Amy Trachtenberg have shared with The Back Room the story of how their art and life collaboration began and has continued to flourish for over 40 years in SF. 💚 🌸 Link in bio!
Miller Company was commissioned to redesign the hillside garden of the beloved Dahlia Garden in Golden Gate Park. Our team worked closely with the Dahlia Society of California volunteer gardeners, SF Parks Alliance, and SF Recreation and Park gardening staff to design new terracing, irrigation, tool storage, and a dedicated area for visitor portrait photographs. The garden, which is free to the public, is tended by the members of the Dahlia Society who grow hundreds of varieties of dahlias for their beauty, competitions, hybridization, and education. The renovation project was sponsored by a generous gift provided by Stasia Obremskey. Come out during the peak blooming season, which occurs in August! 💚 🌸
