Das Bild zeigt das Innere einer Spendenbox aus Venedig, gefüllt mit Münzen, Geldscheinen, Flyern und Papieren. Es verweist auf die Praxis, Spenden für wohltätige Zwecke zu sammeln, die oft in touristischen Städten wie Venedig verbreitet ist.
Venedig ist zugleich Schauplatz eines massiven Tourismus, der Ressourcen, Raum und die Lebensqualität der Bewohner beansprucht. Die Spendenbox, die vermeintlich Gutes bewirken soll, steht in diesem Kontext auch für eine paradoxe Ökonomie: Touristen hinterlassen Geld, während die Stadt unter der Last ihres Besucherstroms leidet.

Final days of ‚Interiors’ Matt Welch @millennial_doom
Is the city a diseased organism or an open living space? Matt Welch’s work focuses on the urban
environment and its impact on people. He poses critical questions about Siegen’s social space, for
example through a video filmed in the old Karstadt building. Through his art, Welch filters
sociological reflections in a critical light, highlighting the dangers of a consumer-driven, one-
dimensional exploitation of urban spaces.
Born in Liverpool in 1988, Matt Welch works at the intersection of installation, sculpture, video,
drawing and sound. His immersive works explore the relationship between physicality and
infrastructure, drawing parallels between biological processes such as breathing, digestion and
excretion, and urban systems such as transport and information. This exploration is also evident in
his sculptures Theatre 1 and Theatre 2. These forms evoke architectural models as well as the
internal structures of human organs, where the movement and exchange of substances symbolically
represent the traversal of spaces or pathways. Here, both bodies and buildings act as protective
shells and retreats - the skin shields the body’s interior, while architecture serves as a sanctuary for
people.

🌐 Ausstellung „Interiors“ von Matt Welch
Die Ausstellung „Interiors“ im Kunstverein Siegen geht in ihre finale Woche!
Die dritte Episode aus Matt Welchs Trilogie „The Secret Millionaire“ wurde im Frankfurter Europaviertel gedreht. Dieses einst von Arbeitern geprägte Viertel wird heute von imposanten Hochhäusern dominiert und spiegelt den Wandel der urbanen Landschaft eindrucksvoll wider.
Der Titel der Videoarbeit spielt auf die gleichnamige britische Reality-Show an, in der Millionäre anonym in benachteiligte Stadtteile gehen, um dort Gutes zu tun. Welch greift diese Idee auf und verbindet sie mit gesellschaftlichen Fragen zu Stadtentwicklung und sozialen Strukturen.
