What a brilliant evening at The Mill, Sonning, for the Laughs & Illusions show tonight! Absolutely excellent from start to finish, and as always, the acts were superb. A huge thank you to Richard Pinner, Maddox Dixon, and Jasper Cromwell Jones for such fantastic performances—talent, laughter, and entertainment all rolled into one unforgettable night. It was made even more special having two of my children there with me last night—something I truly loved. My monthly comedy and magic show just keeps getting better, and I’m already looking forward to the next one in June!

FAREWELL ALVIN... A wonderful Sunday afternoon spent at Chiswick Cinema (I made the start travelling from Leeds with 3 mins to spare!) where 2 screens were booked for a screening of the 1981 Thames TV film A Voyage Round My Father, starring Sir Laurence Olivier and Alan Bates, as a memorial to its director, the Emmy-winning Canadian filmmaker Alvin Rakoff, who died aged 97 last October. The entire audience then strolled back en mass across the local village green to the beautiful house he shared with his wife of 30 years, Sally Hughes, Artistic Director of The @millatsonning Speeches and stories hailed the genius of this giant of film, theatre and TV, who brought a filmic sensibility to UK TV production - he loved long, long shots recalled Peter Egan, who worked with him over five decades - and helped kick-start the careers of stars including Sean Connery, Michael Caine and Alan Rickman. KWPR was delighted to rub shoulders with Jeremy Irons, Sinead Cusack, Mark Curry, Michael Coveney and Sue Hyman and dear Sheila Hancock (who we hadn’t seen since working together on Grey Gardens and Harold and Maude). During Covid Sally unearthed an audio cassette featuring 90 minutes of Alvin’s vocal notes about directing Olivier, who he recounted had trouble learning lines and was not terribly mobile through arthrirtis, and included some recordings of rehearsals. This was skilfully edited down to 10 minutes by Alvin’s favourite film editor, and screened as a prelude to the film screening accompanied by a montage of stills and photo memories. It was a joyous, uplifting afternoon to salute the passing a A Great Artist.

Based on the much-loved 1995 British film, 𝓙𝓪𝓬𝓴 & 𝓢𝓪𝓻𝓪𝓱 arrives at The Mill at Sonning as a beautifully judged world stage premiere. I came to it almost completely fresh, with no real attachment to the film, and left completely won over by its warmth, humour and emotional honesty. Set inside a half-renovated London townhouse, the play follows Jack as grief, new parenthood and unexpected love collide in the messiest, most human way. Duncan Abel’s adaptation finds real theatrical life in the story, while Abigail Pickard Price’s direction lets the comedy and heartbreak breathe without overplaying either. 𝑮𝒆𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒌𝒔 as Jack, gives a performance full of natural warmth, panic, grief and vulnerability. @dogfacedboi is a brilliant emotional surprise as William, funny but genuinely tender, while @anyadeville brings real charm and musical softness as Amy, especially through 𝑺𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒉’𝒔 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒈. The Mill at Sonning adds so much to the experience, with its intimate space, two-course lunch and warm hospitality making the afternoon feel like a proper theatrical event.
