We are happy to participate in this year’s ARCO artfair in Madrid. At our booth you‘ll find three special presentations. 1. Under the title Textures and Structures we present 12 positions that engage, in different and cross-generational ways, with the fundamental principles of order and materiality. On view are works by Hanne Darboven, Carola Dertnig, Joseph Heer, Channa Horwitz, Daniel Lergon, Charlotte Posenenske, Stefan Reiterer, Huda Takriti, Milen Till, Rosemarie Trockel, Ruscha Voormann and Otto Zitko. 2. The series New Painting: Picasso by German concept artist Christian Jankowski - a project that establishes an interface between painting, modernism, and social media. Jankowski selects posts from the internet in which influencers and content creators draw inspiration from paintings by Pablo Picasso or restage them as tableau vivant reenactments. He then transfers these social media images back into oil on canvas, reproducing them in the exact original dimensions of the respective Picasso works. 3. Two more days on view: MILEN TILL’S solo exhibition VIENNESE ACTIVISM at Crone Wien. For his latest project, Milen Till links the radical forms of expression of the Actionists of the past with the uncompromising gestures of today’s climate activists, drawing attention to parallels in image creation and methods of provocation. Viennese Actionism, founded in the 1960s by Günter Brus, Hermann Nitsch, Rudolf Schwarzkogler, and others, sought liberation from repressive, authoritarian social structures, thereby breaking the boundaries of painting. Nowadays, the actions of climate and environmental activist groups consciously or unconsciously employ and adapt their formal language. In the series VIENNESE ACTIVISM Till uses historical picture frames protected by acrylic glass covers. Their interiors remain deliberately empty. Instead, Till pours paint onto the previously untouched acrylic glass in an expressive gesture. Red, blue, or black streaks cover the transparent surface. The boundary between image and frame, and between two- and three-dimensional objects, becomes blurred. For SELBSTBEKLEBUNG (Self-Adhesion) on the other hand, Till incorporated his own body into the complex of works. He develops a cast of his own hand, whose radiant white color is reminiscent of Günter Brus‘ paintings. Fixed on a white base, it becomes a symbol of the uncompromising actions of climate activists. Only the yellowed epoxy glue breaks the integrity of the white and is reminiscent of the morbid stagings of the Vienna Actionists. « (…) Der Einsatz des Körpers ging sowohl im Wiener Aktionismus als auch im Klimaaktivismus weit über das bloße Schütten von Farbe hinaus. Vor allem Günter Brus mach- te seinen Körper zum zentralen Werkzeug seiner Kunst. Er bemalte, fesselte und verletzte sich, entblößte und präsentierte sich einem schockierten Publikum. In seinen Körper-Objekt-Konstellationen inszenierte er Folterinst- rumente wie Nägel, Messer, Rasierklingen oder Scheren neben bemalten Körperteilen wie seinem Kopf oder sei- ner Hand. Während sein Körper in diesen fotografischen Arrangements aber vorerst unversehrt bleibt, gehen die Klimaaktivisten einen Schritt weiter. Sie kleben sich an Bilderrahmen oder Straßenkreuzungen fest und nehmen Verletzungen dadurch in Kauf. Ihre Bilder zirkulieren in Echtzeit durch die sozialen Medien. Sie zeigen Momen- te, die unter die Haut gehen: Auf dem Asphalt klebende oder von Presslufthammern befreite Hände, an denen in fast schon skulpturaler Form Betonreste kleben. Milen Till stellt sie Günter Brus‘ zeitlos wirkenden Schwarz-Weiß- Aufnahmen gegenüber. Mit ihrer nüchternen Sachlichkeit stehen sie im Kontrast zu den flüchtigen Momentaufnah- men der medialen Berichterstattung. Der Bildträger aus geschliffenem Alu-Dibond greift die metallische Materi- alität von Brus‘ Folterwerkzeugen wieder auf. Die Anei- nanderreihung der Bilder lässt an eine Straßenblockade denken.
