Alief, the U.K.-France-based sales agency, has swooped on “Bad Beast” (“Mala Bestia”), one of the most awaited of world premieres at this year’s Málaga Festival main competition.
Ticking multiple right boxes to make an impact in Málaga, “Bad Beast”marks the feature debut of Barbara Ferré, a multi-prized Catalan filmmaker who studied at Barcelona’s ESCAC film school, a new talent powerhouse, going on to win best short at Málaga and Catalonia’s Gaudi Awards for “The Last Virgin.”
A shatteringly blunt loss of virginity drama, the short centers on Sara who will do what it takes to remain part of her group off friends, even if it means having sex, though she’s just 13. She does so, feels nothing.
Penned by “The Last Virgin” writers Alberto Dexeus and Farré,“Bad Beast” (aka “Agrestes”) reprises some of these themes focusing on Atanea, who lives at an rambling county house orphanage and fears growing up and being thrown out to the world on her own.
Her only escape from that is to be “chosen,” adopted. When that happens, giving Atanea a home, she takes it into her head that she will be replaced. Desperate for love and protection, she will commit a terrible act in order to stay forevermore.
A coming-of-age tale, yes, depicting the sensory fascination of teen years and sexual self-discovery, per reports “Bad Beast” stands apart by its record of the impressionability of adolescence, told in a fable structure – Atanea goes to live in a cottage in the woods – which is packed by constantly told fantasy stories, particularly expanding on a bad beast who lives in the nearby forest.

EXCLUSIVE: Following its SXSW premiere last March, Satisfaction is continuing its international festival run this weekend.
In an exclusive new clip from the Alex Burunova-written/directed drama, which makes its U.K. premiere on Saturday at Glasgow Film Festival, Emma Laird‘s Lola has a tense exchange with her partner Philip (Fionn Whitehead) over dinner with their new acquaintance Elena (Zar Amir) during a Greek holiday.
Following Glasgow on March 7-8, the film will screen this month at BFI Flare London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival on March 22-23 and Manchester Film Festival on March 23.
Set on an unnamed Greek island, Satisfaction stars Laird as a young artist attempting to reclaim her voice—both creatively and intimately—while navigating a complicated relationship with her boyfriend (Whitehead), a fellow musician. When another woman (Zar Amir) enters the picture, buried tensions rise to the surface.
“As human beings, we’re all programmed to long for love and to want it, and sometimes, we kind of make wrong choices to be loved or to feel that feeling, and we betray ourselves,” said Burunova at Deadline’s SXSW Studio. “And so, this story is a little bit about that self-erasure and losing yourself in another person in the name of love.”

Alief closes deals on Toronto, Tallinn, Fantasia titles

Toronto title ’Kanaval’, Tallinn prize winner ’Mongrels’ and Fantasia winner ’Nesting’ have all sold.
EXCLUSIVE: UK-France sales agent Alief has closed a trio of deals on its slate, including for Toronto title Kanaval, Tallinn prize winner Mongrels and Fantasia winner Nesting.
Henri Pardo’s Kanaval is the story of one young boy’s journey from a small port town on the coast of Haiti in 1975. Tricorder Universe will release in German and Austrian cinemas. Producers are Yzanakio Productions in Canada and Wady Films in Luxembourg. Kanaval won best Canadian feature film, and Best BIPOC Canadian feature at TIFF 2023.
Jerome Yoo’s Korean immigration drama Mongrels has sold to Film Choice Corp for Korea, having won the Fipresci prize and a special jury award for its cast in the first feature competition at Tallinn. Canadian producers are Nach Dudsdeemaytha and Tesh Guttikonda.
Breaking Glass has picked up Chloé Cinq-Mars’s Canada and Switzerland co-production Nesting for the US, with Wild Duck Productions taking for Spain. A new mother grappling with sleep deprivation and postpartum depression, finds herself unable to separate dream from reality. The film won the best Canadian director prize at Fantasia. Producers are Canada’s 1976 Productions and Switzerland’s Point Prod.

Tallinn prize winner ‘China Sea’ picked up for sales
Exclusive: UK-France sales outfit Alief has picked up international sales on Lithuanian filmmaker Jurgis Matulevičius’ Tallinn prize winner China Sea.
The true story-inspired psychological drama follows a martial arts champion, played by Marius Repšys, who accidentally injures a girl on the street and is expelled from the sports federation.
Producers are Lithuania’s Ieva Cern and Stasys Baltakis, with Taiwan’s Amy Ma. Co-producers are Poland’s Marta Gmosinska, Mariusz Wlodarski and Czech Republic’s Jakub Košťál and Vratislav Šlajer.
China Sea won the best film award in the critics’ picks competition at Tallinn.

Alief Boards Nick Butler’s ‘Lunar Sway’ for World Sales (EXCLUSIVE)

U.K.-France sales outfit Alief has boarded world sales rights to “Lunar Sway,” the sophomore feature from Canadian writer-director Nick Butler.
The film stars Noah Parker (“In Cold Light,” “Who by Fire”) and Liza Weil (“How to Get Away With Murder,” “The Cleaning Lady”) in the story of Cliff, an unconventional young man navigating the search for connection. When his estranged birth mother Marg arrives unexpectedly, the two form a quick bond, but her hidden past and a vengeful pursuer threaten their newfound relationship.
The supporting cast includes Kaden Connors (“Heated Rivalry”), Grace Glowicki (“Dead Lover”) and Douglas Smith (“Horizon: An American Saga”).
Butler said the film explores outsiders existing on society’s margins. “This is a movie about misfits living on the fringe, and I hope that audiences will see themselves reflected in them and the universal theme of looking for love in all the wrong places,” he said. “Alief is the right partner to help us reach the audiences this film will connect with.”
