Navigating Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Landscape in Southeast Asia
With Nguyễn Tú Hằng & Trần Thảo Miên (AiRViNe)
14:00 - 15:00, May 5, 2026
Studio88, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Southeast Asia is home to some of the most organic, experimental, and community-driven Artist-in-Residence (AIR) programs in the world—but finding your way through them can feel like navigating without a map.
Join Nguyễn Tú Hằng and Trần Thảo Miên, the duo behind AiRViNe, for a practical and insightful session at Studio88. Drawing from their extensive research on residency ecosystems, they will break down the "perks and perils" of the region. This is a deep dive into how to find, apply for, and—most importantly—survive and thrive in residencies both within and from Southeast Asia.
Agenda:
- The SEA Reality Check: Identifying the unique strengths (perks) and systemic hurdles (problems) of our local residency scene.
- The Paper Trail: Where to find funding and support when the "big grants" aren't an option.
- Building Your Tribe: How to find and maintain a network that actually opens doors.
- The Artist’s Toolkit: Practical preparation—from your portfolio to your mental approach—for a successful residency stint.
This session is designed for artists and cultural practitioners looking to expand their horizons within the region and beyond. Bring your questions, your projects, and your curiosity.
Nguyễn Tú Hằng is currently the recipient of the Japan Foundation Asia Cultural Exchange Fellowship (Visual Arts). From December 2025 to May 2026, Nguyễn Tú Hằng & Trần Thảo Miên (founders of AiRViNe) is traveling across Japan and Southeast Asia (the Philippines, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia) to investigate residency programs and international exchange ecosystems while exploring possibilities for future collaboration.
This event is supported by Studio88.

Trà-đá Ngủ-trưa
A Napping Tea Shop for Unfiltered Art Conversations
Come sip tea, sit, talk—and… nap together in a participatory session with Trần Thảo Miên
Trà-đá Ngủ-trưa reimagines Vietnamese trà đá (street tea culture)as a space for informal conversation—without hierarchy, and without the pressure to say anything “smart.”
We begin by sitting together, sharing tea and stories, then gradually transition into a collective nap.
The session opens a space where attention slowly softens, authorship dissolves, and presence is redistributed more equally.
This iteration functions as a live experiment, using napping as an artistic mediumto question cultures of urgency and productivity, through the body as a site of shared experience.
This session is presented by airvine (Vietnam)in collaboration with Light Bulb (Chiang Mai)
See you on 3 May 2025, 13:30–15:00 at the Rooftop, Light Bulb(opposite the School for the Deaf)
Limited to 5–6 participants(Pillows and mats will be provided)

Share-Meeting 3: What we mean when we say "sustainable"✨
This March 2026, AiRViNe joined Share-Meeting 3 in George Town as observers—a unique gathering of independent spaces and artist-run initiatives from across East, Southeast, and South Asia. The latest reflection by Nguyễn Tú Hằng dives deep into the intensity of practice, "soft infrastructure," and the haunting question: “Why dream alone, when we’re all dreaming the same thing?”

I teach my hand to sleep

Reel of only a few last days of 2025, on our research trip about Residency program with babi @stillzel , while preparing for an important milestone in my career...
This year, I've encountered so many amazing people, and collectives, and families. We shared stories, the happy ones and the sad ones too. I've received so much love and help from everyone, much more than I could wish for. Saying thank you will never be enough. But anw, thank you, thank you, thank you...

"Thought" from Holobiont series is the artwork that marked the moment I chose art as my career. It allowed me to touch a childhood dream I thought I had left behind—becoming a surgeon :)))
Working with Assoc. Prof. Bùi Thị Việt Hà to learn about microbiota, I traded a scalpel for a needle and used fishing nets. Though it will not be in my upcoming solo exhibition, it’s the starting point, from the Citizen Earth Project to recent show at RMIT Gallery in Melbourne, Australia.
P.S. This journey would not set off without c.Linh @dotuonglinh , who encouraged me to join the art, and chị tôi- Gigi of Six Space for creating the Citizen Earth project. 🤍
