couple years ago me and @flaveforreal was galavantin’ round the SFMoma and i seen that Yves Klein stuff for the first time in person. i mean it was cool, but i was drawn to how deep the blue was and how big the piece was. it sent me down this lor rabbit hole of memories and associations forreal , blue note records, blues people by leroi jones, the Gross Sisters 😂 the blue huggie, and all the time i spend alone on baselines, in hallways, under bleachers editin my work or on planes and buses listenin to or thinkin about music. when im not talkin im probably obsessin over a clean lor riff, i might be scattin in my head or thinkin about a dimiuendo that hit harder than the chorus or climax of my favorite songs i’m way more drawn to and interested in the quieter moments you really gotta pay attention to and have a feel for instead of the big yell after a dunk to be honest and i think that’s apparent in the work i’ve been makin over the last decade or so because basketball been the top layer for me to express a range of other interests + feelings forreal and lately i been interested in james brown craftin what we know as funk (i shot most of media day in a small room bumpin Bootsy, tell me im lyin @itsmclaughlin11 ) in the chitlin circuit and how that genre and gave folks somethin real to latch onto outside that whole respectability politics thing motown had goin on. and how, in a way, it’s kinda like mike givin us the fadeaway, bringin the game out to the midrange when everything was about the paint or kobe hittin us w the reverse spin move, about how spots like The Royal Theater, Howard Theater, The Apollo an dhow important they were in makin space for black musicians to be free, to experiment, to express themselves and work on their craft til they eventually redefine the game as we know it. it’s all the same to me fr. much love to the band @bjackk_1 @joshhuskin @indiegriptexas @rance.ristau @rashadxwhite @schwarzellecom
