WOMEN IN TECH | Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Hon. Emma Theofelus, says Namibia cannot afford to wait for perfect conditions before embracing technology and unlocking the country’s digital economy. Speaking during the Huawei ICT Congress Gala Dinner and the launch of the Women in Tech and 2026 National Talent Cultivation Project in Windhoek, Theofelus said government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for innovation, digital inclusion and skills development. The Minister noted that resistance to technology adoption still exists in some communities, particularly around digital infrastructure and online services, but stressed that Namibia must continue moving forward while communities adapt to the changing technological landscape. During the event, the Minister also presented awards as part of the Huawei, recognising contributions towards digital innovation and ICT development The Minister also called for stronger partnerships between government and the private sector to accelerate Namibia’s digital transformation agenda and empower more young people, especially women, with ICT skills for the future. The event was attended by Khomas Region Governor Hon. Sam Nujoma, representatives from Huawei Sub-Saharan Africa, the Chinese Embassy in Namibia, and industry stakeholders.

EDITORS ENGAGEMENT | The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Hon. Emma Theofelus, today engaged news editors and the media fraternity on matters relating to media and government collaboration, cybersecurity awareness, artificial intelligence in media, and the promotion of Brand Namibia. Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Wenzel Kavaka, and Executive Director, Linda Nakale, were also in attendance. The engagement formed part of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology’s 2nd Engagement with News Media Editors held at the Namibia Institute of Public Administration and Management in Windhoek. During the engagement, the Minister highlighted the importance of proactive information sharing by government institutions and strengthened collaboration between the media and public office bearers. She underscored government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for the media sector to thrive. The engagement brought together editors, media practitioners and government representatives to discuss issues affecting the media and information sector in Namibia.

COMMEMORATION | Namibia today, 8 May 2026, commemorated World Press Freedom Day at the National Library and Archives Services in Windhoek, following the global observance held on 3 May 2026. Delivering remarks at the commemoration, Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology Hon. Wenzel Kavaka said Namibia’s continued recognition as one of Africa’s leading countries in press freedom reflects Government’s commitment to maintaining a free, independent and pluralistic media environment. He noted that the inscription of the Windhoek Declaration into UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register affirms Namibia’s historic role in shaping the global agenda on press freedom and media pluralism, while also serving as a reminder of the responsibility to protect and advance these principles for future generations. He further stressed that a free media remains essential in promoting transparency, accountability and meaningful citizen participation in democratic processes. The event brought together government officials, members of the media, development partners and stakeholders to reflect on the importance of press freedom, media independence and access to information in strengthening democracy. Other Speakers included Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture Hon. Dr. Sanet Steenkamp and UNESCO Representative to Namibia Eunice Smith, EU Ambassador to Namibia Ana Beatriz Martins, NMT Media Foundation Board Chairperson Gwen Lister, and EFN Chairperson Toivo Ndjebela. Speakers noted that Namibia continues to play a special role in advancing press freedom globally, while also calling for continued vigilance, support for quality journalism, and the full implementation of the Access to Information Act. During the ceremony, Minister of Education Hon. Sanet Steenkamp handed over the Windhoek Declaration Certificate of Inscription to Deputy Minister of ICT Hon. Wenzel Kavaka, who officially presented it to Deputy Director of National Library and Archives Services Ms. Namutenya Hamwaalwa on behalf of the institution.

CASSINGA DAY | President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, today led the nation in commemorating the 48th anniversary of the Cassinga massacre, honouring both the lives lost and the survivors of the 1978 attack on Namibian refugees in southern Angola. Delivering the keynote address in Olukekete Center Outapi Constituency, the President reflected on the brutality of the attack, where hundreds of innocent civilians, mainly women and children, were killed by the apartheid South African regime. She noted that the tragedy became a defining moment in Namibia’s liberation struggle, strengthening the resolve for independence. Commemorated under the theme “48 years of Honour and Sacrifice Inspiring the Future,” the event paid tribute to fallen heroes and heroines while calling on Namibians to safeguard the country’s independence and unity. The President also highlighted the importance of national reconciliation, youth empowerment, and continued socio-economic development. She further urged citizens to uphold good governance, reject corruption, and work collectively towards building an inclusive and prosperous Namibia, emphasising that the sacrifices of Cassinga must remain the foundation of the nation’s freedom and future.

COMMEMORATION | A wreath-laying ceremony was held in Outapi ahead of the Cassinga Day Celebrations, with President HE Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah leading proceedings at the memorial gravesite. The President was joined by Speaker of the National Assembly Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, SWAPO Party Secretary General Sophia N. Shaningwa, Omusati Governor Immanuel S. Shikongo, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba Sergio Vigoa de la Uz, and Angola Consul General André Ventura. The ceremony honoured fallen heroes and heroines whose sacrifices contributed to Namibia’s freedom and independence.
