Please join us tomorrow, May 18 at 11 AM, for the first guided tour of the Prefabricating Solidarity: IMS Žeželj Between Yugoslavia, Cuba, and Angola exhibition Muzej afričke umetnosti / The Museum of African Art in Belgrade.
In the exhibition, and the accompanying catalog, the photographs are nested in five sections without particular geographic specificity: Factory, Transfer and Adaptation, Community, People, and No Ordinary Sunsets.
Transfer and Adaptation provides a perspective on the ecosystem created by the IMS buildings and plants. The tropical climate of the Caribbean and Western Africa supported the co-existence of lush plants and concrete. Plants frame the architecture and are framed by the buildings. Cement containers, like hands, cradle the plants. Plants protrude and resist. They adapt, like the people, and the system itself.
