🌿✨ Opening Night: Breakdown at Staten Island Museum ✨🌿
The Breakdown exhibition is officially open, and I’m thrilled to have my work included in this powerful exploration of decay, time, and transformation. 🌀 @statenislandmuseum
This interdisciplinary exhibition brings together contemporary art, scientific innovation, and natural history to examine the beauty and significance of decomposition in our ecosystems. My work reflects my ongoing fascination with mold spores and their role in reshaping our understanding of life, growth, and renewal.
A heartfelt thank you to the Staten Island Museum, my fellow artists, and everyone who joined us to celebrate this transformative show. Your support and curiosity fuel the conversation about art, science, and sustainability. đź’›

Unique card nr. 113 from the Pillow Book fragment project, now by the other wonderful artworks in Annapolis, MD. #pillowbookfragment Thank you @joost_vandebrug for this beautiful artwork
New fine prints are in. Close-up views of mold spores and their growth—quiet, persistent, and constantly transforming.
Printed on textured Hahnemühle fine art paper, these 13×19” works hold the subtle shifts of expansion, discoloration, and organic movement. What may first appear abstract is entirely real—an active record of living processes unfolding over time.
I’m drawn to how something often overlooked or avoided can become a visual language. These prints invite a closer look, reconsidering ideas of beauty, decay, and presence. #bioart #fineartprints #hahnemühle #photography #moldspores
Beautiful landscapes don’t disappear overnight.
They change slowly, quietly, often irreversibly.
In this work, mold spores transform Polaroid images over time, reshaping them into something unstable and unfamiliar.
A reflection on fragility, environment, and change. Eroded Landscapes I, documentation of evolving mold growth, originally 15 min, 2026
I have these prints at my Open Studio
They are available for purchase—DM if you’re interested. Archival inkjet prints on Hahnemühle fine art paper, 2026. #bioart #microbialgrowth #artwork
Meet Selin Balci (@microbialgrowth ) ✨
Selin Balci is an interdisciplinary artist whose work brings together microbiology, ecology, and contemporary art to reveal the hidden systems shaping both human and environmental life.
With a background in microbiology and an MFA in mixed media, Selin uses living organisms—particularly mold spores—as active collaborators in her process. Through installations, photography, and time-based media, she transforms microbial behavior into visual and spatial experiences, creating living landscapes that evolve over time.
Her work explores interaction, competition, and coexistence—highlighting the fragility and interconnectedness of natural systems in ways that are both scientific and deeply visual.
Selin’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at @museumsinclairhaus in Germany, @statenislandmuseum , and the @baltimoremuseumofart as part of the Baker Artist Awards exhibition.
Selin will be showing with @artfarmannapolis during the 2026 Artist Open Studios Tour

So proud of my Alternative Photography students and the incredible work they produced this semester. They explored liquid emulsion, cyanotypes, Van Dyke Browns, and Polaroid lifts — experimenting, problem-solving, and creating truly beautiful alternative photographic images.
Swipe through to see a selection of their final pieces, and finish with our group photo 🤍
Such a talented and dedicated class — amazing job, everyone!

🦠Tiny Giants
The power of microorganisms
📅 28.11.2025 – 12.04.2026
📍 Museum Brot und Kunst
I’m excited to share that my work is part of Tiny Giants, an exhibition that opens a window into the astonishing world of microorganisms , the tiny life-forms that shaped our planet and continue to sustain it in ways we’re only beginning to understand. @museumbrotundkunst #bioart #moldgrowth #microorganisms
From the microbes that enrich our soil to the bacteria and fungi that create the flavors we love in bread, beer, yogurt, and chocolate, this unseen universe is constantly at work. The exhibition explores their roles in the environment, in our bodies, and in the future of sustainability.
Alongside my piece, you’ll find incredible works by many inspiring artists who bring the microscopic realm to life through photography, sculpture, installation, and more.
If you’re nearby, I’d love for you to experience it. ✨
Up and down. Up and down. This time-lapse gathers my installations from different galleries and lets you see them unfold as if they were living organisms. Like mold spores spreading across a surface. #bioart #contemporaryart #contemporary #artistlife #installationart
