Closing today: The Convent of La Tourette is a modernist monastery built for Dominican Friars by Le Corbusier between 1953 and 1960. It is located in Éveux, France, near Lyon. The building, overlooking rolling hillsides, is Le Corbusier’s last major work in France. It is a mature work whose strength, richness, and complexity are such that in 1986 French architects chose it as the second most important contemporary work, after the Centre Pompidou by Piano and Rogers.   For more than twenty years, Brother Marc Chauveau lived at the convent, and in 2007, he initiated an exhibition program of contemporary art by prominent living artists that continues to this day.   Although he now lives in Paris, Brother Marc is an art historian and curator, and recently collaborated with Michel Mouffe for an exhibition that places the Belgian artist’s work in dialogue with the iconic architecture.   The exhibition is particularly special because it marks a 40-year anniversary of Mouffe’s first encounter with Le Corbusier, which took place in 1983 during a stay at the Guiette house, one of the architect’s early constructions.   Tracing Le Corbusier’s history as an architect from the Guiette house to his last major work in France, the Convent of La Tourette, offered a unique opportunity to reflect on Mouffe’s artistic journey as well, a career that has placed light, silence, contemplation, humanity, and the vibrations of colour as essential. Following the conclusion of Michel Mouffe’s successful solo exhibition at Le Corbusier’s Couvent of La Tourette today, November 23, we’re pleased to announce that the artworks will travel to Belgium to be part of an exhibition titled, [Into the Veil] at Axel Vervoordt Gallery, Kanaal. On Saturday, December 14, we invite you to join us for the opening in presence of the artist. The opening day features the artist in conversation with Kathleen Weyts, director of GLEAN, a Brussels magazine for contemporary art. The exhibition will continue through spring 2025. More information will follow soon.
