Had a great time participating in an author talk with Heather Montilla at Bellwood Public Library in Bellwood, IL on 7/19. Discussed my books IDA B THE QUEEN (for adults) and IDA B WELLS: VOICE OF TRUTH (for children).
I was amazed by how young people made an incredible display to capture the life and work of my great-grandmother #IdaBWells and the sculptor #RichardHunt who created The Light of Truth: Ida B. Wells National Monument (3729 S. Langley in #Chicago). Check out how the student sculpture is obviously inspired by Richard Hunt's work.
The Monument is on the land where the Ida B. Wells Homes stood from 1941-2002. It was installed in 2021 and some additional pieces were added on 7/17. The project, which took 17 years of effort, is now complete.
Love the beautiful cake Bellwood Public Library made with the image of my book cover! All in tribute to Ida B. Wells' July 16th birthday. Born in 1862, it's her 163rd heavenly birthday.

It was so great to attend the Jan 23 event @nmaahc to celebrate the new Ida B Wells quarter in honor of my great-grandmother. Such a joy to participate in a panel with my brother Dan and Regina D Langley PhD, moderated by I Augustus Durham.
The quarter is beautiful. My brother and I enjoyed consulting with the US Mint on the design. The quarters can be ordered from www.usmint.gov and coloring page is available on www.kids.usmint.gov

The NYC Suffrage Mural Photo Dump!
Had a blast with Suffrage Mural Co-Director Michelle Duster, scouting giant walls for our upcoming mural project. And couldn't miss seeing the Suffs play again, we are OBSESSED! Some pics with Nikki James (plays Ida B. Wells) and Tsilala Brock (Dudley Malone) and Ada Westfall (Mrs Herndon). Smiles and sobbing, and overwhelming gratitude to witness this production again.
We scouted some HUGE walls with our friends at Downtown Alliance NY (Joshua Nachowitz and Victoria Pennacchio), saw their art installation Star Light Star Bright by studio Hou de Sousa and nearby lights at Zuccotti Park.
Met up with our great feminist friend and funder of this project, while catching a not too bad view from the Rockefeller Club.Â
Got to see and scheme with bestie and unbelievably talented artist Sam Kirk - who is designing the NYC mural. We saw her preliminary designs... and we're still swooning ya'll. We can't wait to share more about her design, mural location and unveiling!

My great-grandmother #IdaBWells was a #Truthteller who used her voice as a pioneering investigative journalist to expose truths around race-based violence & terror. She also was a leader in the #suffrage movement and fought for women's right to vote.
In my book, IDA B THE QUEEN, I summarize her life & connect her work to recent and current people and movements.
