A song for Renee Good. I am so sorry that you are gone. The glove compartment overflowing with stuffed animals and her last words are haunting. I can’t shake them from my mind. There are a few things I want to say in anticipation of the inevitable backlash. The first is that I will never seek to profit in any way from this song, it was made for her widow and her children. It will always be a free song and never available for purchase. Also, my acknowledgment of her death does not diminish the death of anyone else who has died in the history of the world. Seems pretty obvious but apparently it needs to be said. I support the military and law enforcement. I do not view what is currently going on, as synonymous with either. Thank you to our local/state police and all who serve in our military for your sacrifice. If I was in either community, I would be insulted to have these untrained officers and this hateful movement associated with me. They are not the same. I do not consider myself a liberal or a democrat. I would vote for a rodeo clown if they could unite this country and heal the division we are currently experiencing. To those circulating false arrest records and trying to disparage her name, that is truly such vile behavior. This was an unarmed mother. Trying to stand up against an operation enabling the profiling of anyone with black and brown skin. Much like the person we celebrate on this holiday. Lastly, please save the Fox News talking points and assume that we have all seen the video. Thank you Tommy Vee for joining me, @rockhouse_productions for hosting, and @miketfilms of @rubinskivisual for shooting. I am so proud to be a Minnesotan, and see how many brave souls are standing up to condemn what is going on. We have the best people in this state. Nice is not a weakness.

We’re from Minnesota So we don’t really need ya Brother we got our own damn police They don’t hit women They don’t take children And they don’t shoot people dead in the street We don’t hide our faces here We’ll buy a stranger a beer And then talk like we’ve known em for years We’re from Minnesota And we don’t wanna hold ya So pack your shit and get the fuck out of here Left right left and walk away from all the damage Left right left we’ll clean the mess up we can manage Take your Homan and Noem man and Little Bovino Have ‘em bet it all on white at the Trump Casino You tried to bring your hate here But hate doesn’t stay here So go find some miserable place Where they see all their problems And everything they’ve done wrong In the shape of a black or brown face We’re MINNESOTA we’ll find our way

I was gifted a unique opportunity to talk about my family, music, and mental health struggles thanks to a new non-profit called @seekingpermission1 They believe in the power of music. And gather funds to provide instruments, lessons, and music therapy programs for kids that need them. Music saved my life, and I know there are many more out there who could be saved by finding a creative outlet. Son, what you wanna be when you grow up He said an oak tree One with roots so strong that go so deep That anything can fall on me So you can fall on me if you feel weak Stand by me if you’re strong There will never be no bent knee We will all stand tall All stand tall

Kicking off the music series: Michael Shynes + Chris Kroeze — May 16th @ 7PM. If you’re into soulful songwriting, country with grit, and the kind of live music that actually pulls you in, this is your show. Shynes blends folk, pop, and R&B with honest, lived-in lyrics, while Kroeze brings that high-energy country sound shaped by small-town roots and big-stage experience. An easy night to settle into… and a strong start to the season. 🎟️ Grab your tickets at the link in our bio 🍴 Food by @thenorthtables 📍Milk & Honey Ciders, St. Joseph, MN 🐾 Leashed pets welcome 🪑 Bring a chair or blanket #visitjoetown

This is my new friend Frankie. He flew all the way in from Miami to come to one of my shows this past weekend. Frankie is a former marine who not very long again weighed 445 pounds and was drinking 6 handles of vodka a week. He told me of a medical episode where he died twice before being revived. The reason for his visit was that my song ‘Born Again’ had resonated with him so deeply in a low moment that he wanted to experience it live. I had never performed that song before but quickly worked out an acoustic version for him. I could tell two things about Frankie. That he had been to Hell and back, and that I loved him instantly. He had this spirit of just wanting to help others do what he had done. And the way he consistently tried to diminish his incredible accomplishments in overcoming addiction, losing weight, and serving in the military, I knew he was also a humble man. This was such an affirmation to me of the power of a song, and one I desperately needed at the time. It was also cool to hear that @tonyrobbins (someone who has been a vital voice in Frankie’s recovery) uses the song ‘Born Again’ in one of the most prominent moments at his conferences. Something I otherwise wouldn’t have known, as I don’t know all of the licensing uses of my music. I got the sense I made a lifelong friend, and look forward to the next time I see or hear from him. Music is such a powerful thing, and I believe it always will be, independent of the details.

Never did I think I’d live to see the day where we would hand over the last vestiges of human expression to machines. It’s like living out a science fiction movie, but with less resistance. I, along with many creatives, can feel the difference. My once thriving custom song business has all but disappeared, streaming numbers continue to drop in the sea of thousands of AI songs being uploaded daily, and the role of the songwriter in this modern age certainly feels tenuous. That being said, I’m a fighter and a hustler, and sometimes it’s good to have an adversary. So I am taking the price tag off all of my custom work. Send me your song ideas, and if you are willing to let me write them, I’ll do it for whatever you can afford. All the way down to the $10 cost of a Suno subscription. Or all the way down to free even, if you don’t love it. I am willing to fight for the role of humans in creating art. In fact, I think letting go of that notion is a threat to the viability of our species. Do you want to live in a world where ‘Artist’ is no longer a career, and art forms are no longer practiced? Where picking up an instrument or writing on a page becomes a thing of the past? These new options are the microwaves of expression. A soggy, barely edible, soulless, derivative version of the human condition. Delivered fast, And on the backs of those who have given everything to their work. I’m here to tell you that the soul delivers that last ten percent of the process. And the part of music that is felt, will never be fully replicated by a machine. It might sound good, but it won’t keep you warm. It is the difference between someone clicking like on one of your posts, or an actual person wrapping you in a warm embrace and laying their head on your shoulder. I am willing to try and show you the difference, the only way I know how. Which is by writing songs. Send me your song ideas to [email protected] and if it’s something I can execute I will be in touch 🤝

Hey Friends, Excited to announce my first ever @netflix placement in Season 2 of @temptation.island which dropped today. If you hear this song in your viewing let Joshua Schmidt (we made this song together) and I know where. It might be instrumental, it might have vocals, it might be for 10 seconds or a full minute. At any rate this is a milestone moment and hopefully a sign of things to come. So I sat on the floor of my studio and sang a bit of it for you. The song is also out on streaming today as well so add it to your playlists 🙏🏼 Thank you to @atriummusicofficial for making this happen and to my beloved collaborator @jeremydineganmusic for introducing me to such a wonderful sync company.

One week from tonight I have the honor of opening up for my dear friend @jasonschommer at the @theparkwaympls Looking forward to playing all the songs I’ve written about my beloved Twin Cities. Lucky for you there will be a hilarious show that follows my set. Grateful for artists like Springsteen that have not hesitated to speak up during these trying times. I am lucky to make music for a living. But I’ll go back to playing dive bars if I have to, if it means being able to speak my truth.
