In preparation for the facilitation workshops I’ll be leading this summer, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the relationship between listening, attention and holding/activating space in classrooms, meetings, public forums, rehearsals, engagement activities, arts and health settings…so I did some writing about that. Yesterday with State of Mind in Rocky Boy was special. We spent the entire day in the new Miyo Pimatisiwinkamik Youth Wellness Center, a 30,000 sq. ft. youth-centered facility that blends Western healthcare with Indigenous knowledge, providing holistic care from birth to young adulthood. The building, which you can see in some of these photos, is incredible. It was developed after years of community visioning and youth input. We are among the first guests to be in the space; we held workshops and our performance there. The HS students we met feel the support and care the facility and its programming represent- our time with them was inspiring, and illuminating. And the adults- the educators, the health workers, the local leaders- who made this happen and who staff the building and its programs- they’re not done. Their work continues, and as they serve their community’s young people, they’re also trying to figure out how to support each other, and all the adults in this tight-knit community. This morning we co-host a local coalition meeting at the Health Center across the street; we’ll debrief from yesterday, and we’ll be exploring ways to return and continue our collaboration here.w/Kendra Potter, Ean Kessler and Octavio Jimenez.

Part of the chorus of keeping what’s happening in Minneapolis in our focus every day. Not a story to get burned out on or let become background noise. It’s happening, people are standing up, and we need to see it every day.
As we complete our 30th tour residency/performance with State of Mind, I wrote about it, and about some of what we’re learning. Link in bio under theatre and building trust.
