Salon De Résistance | Art Against Power
Join us for Salon de Résistance on April 30 at Black Iris for an unfiltered conversation about the role of art and culture during times of political upheaval with three of Richmond’s leading artists. This is a free event open to the public.
———————
Art has never been neutral. Across generations, artists have either created in defiance of authority or been coopted by power to legitimize it. Today, that tension is tightening as American democracy backslides, redefining how we create, consume, and reflect art back into the world. Yet not long ago, art didn’t hesitate, standing at the vanguard of social resistance and cultural change.
That wasn’t accidental. There were incentives to challenge power. But in the past 18 months those incentives have changed. Political pressure shapes what gets funded. Controversy is avoided. Technology is changing how we create. And financial opportunities are contingent on dissent being avoided, power going unchallenged, and the status-quo maintained.
But what happens to art when nothing is at risk? Can culture survive when there’s no reflection to show us who we are or where we’re going? These questions feel especially urgent in Virginia, where our proximity to power shapes global conversations that bleed out into the entire world. Narrow that aperture even further, and Richmond is where that struggle takes creative form as the epicenter of cultural life in the Commonwealth.
In this salon, we’ll move beyond abstraction to examine how art challenges power in 2026, and how that dynamic shapes what gets made in the studio, painted on walls, displayed in galleries, written on the page, and confronted by artists in their own work.

Richmond native Donnie Lewis, better known as Mad Skillz, won his first Grammy Sunday for his latest album "Words for Days, Volume 1."
The spoken-word album showcases Virginia's music community, including 14 Richmond-area musicians, producers and engineers.
"I want this win to inspire and uplift every creative from where I'm from. Through hard work and dedication you can achieve any dream you have. It may not happen when you want it to or the way that you want it to but if you stay on your path with your passion? It will happen," Skillz said in a statement to CBS 6.
Story at the link in our bio.
On Friday, Michael Millions (@michaelmillions ) or should we now say Michael "Muscles" Millions, left the booth and apparently entered the kitchen because the quotes were cookin' 🔥🔥🔥 for #CMinnovation.
Some quotes from Friday:
🎵The longest journey we ever take is 12 inches. It's the distance between our minds and our hearts.
🎧You shouldn't do anything in life when you dont know what you want.
🎶Innovation isn't always about creating new things, it's also about using the tools you have to create new perspectives
🎙Always answer your phone☎️
🎵Innovation is remixing your truth. Innovation is messy. Innovation is human. Innovation is seeing something we all see, but with a different perspective.
This was just the tip of the iceberg on quotes that really made us all say "mmmhmmmm" in a collective head nod agreement.
Stay tuned for when Michael's video recording, from Friday, drops on our website. To view past speakers videos you can head to the link in our bio and check it out.

I’ve known him for a few years now, and he’s one of the most humble, down-to-earth people you’ll ever meet—but don’t get it twisted, he’s also a musical genius. From rapping to producing, he really does it all. If you know, you know—my guy got the juice! 🥤🎶

Today, the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, in collaboration with The Martin Agency and its Black Employee Network, hosted a profoundly impactful panel discussion in celebration of Hip Hop History Month.
A full house engaged in a compelling dialogue centered on the intersections of cultural impact, artistry as a platform for influence, strategic marketing, and the profound messages embedded within hip-hop music.
Sincere gratitude to our panelists—Radio B, Michael Millions, and Noah O and moderator Mike Street for their invaluable insights into the transformative power of hip-hop.
