Today we made it to Denham in Shark Bay. We wanted to check out the stromatolites, but the tide was wrong and the boardwalk had been destroyed by a cyclone a few years ago. Shell beach was cool - made from billions (?) of tiny cockle shells that survive in the hypersaline water.
Today was also the first cool day of the trip - temperatures in the low 20s with some rain.
π Global Gathering for Galapagos π To celebrate the 65th anniversary of the incredible conservation research & accomplishments of the Charles Darwin Foundation, our Founder Judy Carvalhal & her husband Rodolfo attended a fundraiser in Metchosin, BC (Victoria) Canada yesterday. Events were held in 65 locations around the world to raise funds & awareness π
π Thank you to Marc & Heather of @cnhtours@galapagostravel.cnh & team for organizing and hosting this lovely event at the Bilston Creek Lavender Farm in Metchosin. And thank you to special guest, global wildlife expert Michael Jackson @michaeljackson2403 for telling us about some of the great work the foundation is doing. Our Founder Judy got to share about her experience living and running her tourism business in Galapagos for 40+ years! We connected with the global event in the US by Zoom video call. Great to see friends and meet some new connections who are passionate about Galapagos conservation π
πΏ From the @charlesdarwinfoundation : βWeβre celebrating this 65th anniversary milestone alongside our community of donors at the Houston Zoo, a long-standing ally and supporter of our work in the Galapagos. Tonight is our last one in New Zealand this trip. It has been an amazing one. I have seen 59 new to me bird species as well as spectacular landscapes and wonderful people. After Rotorua, we made our way to Maketu where we visited Julian Fitter. Julian hired me to work in the Galapagos as a naturalist in 1980 and that changed the direction of my life! Julian is very involved in wetland conservation in the Bay of Plenty and guided us to a nice beach where I saw 4 new shorebird species! After leaving Julian we went to the Firth of Thames and visited the shorebird sanctuary there. It was amazing to see the number of shorebirds there at high tide. Our last stop is Εrewa Beach where we have a nice beachfront campsite
