From 1953 until his passing in 2019, Michael stayed true to his convictions, steadfast in his belief that “teaching [was] about each actor developing their own acting method.”
When asked if he contributed to developing the understanding of acting, he said simply — “I don’t know. Nothing. Here’s what I do know, with some pleasure and surprise. I think I’m very good at what I do. I think I’m useful because I love what I’m doing. I love and respect actors. I think what actors do is important. They make ideas on the page come to life in a three-dimensional way. I think I’ve changed individuals, nothing more.”

I was taught that sweeping the stage was a part of the preparation of the work. It is a beautiful, meditative practice. It places me in the role of being of service to the art, remembering the whole and honoring the practice.
