At 98 years old, this woman, known as Zegbagbã (the broken pot), is by far the coolest person in Dzodze, Ghana. In this region, those practicing medicine will ask for a piece of a broken pot on which to mix the herbs. The broken pot has become the symbol of something thought to have no value but serving a powerful purpose.
In this ceremony, Chief Torgbui Atsu-Dzesu granted us citizenship into his kingdom of Dzodze, Ghana. The citizenship was represented by the beads he bestowed upon us. The Chief could only be spoken to and would only speak through his official "linguist." I have met many Chiefs of many kingdoms over the years, and this ceremony stands alone as such a deeply meaningful and fascinating experience.
