It was 1995, and the film was βUnstrung Heroes.β It was Diane Keatonβs feature film debut as a director. She wanted me in it. βHeβs not just a funnyman,β she told people. βHeβs an actor.β Coming from her, that was high praise. In the picture here, I am with the fantastic Andie MacDowell and Diane at the Cannes Film Festival. It was an exciting time β hard for me as an introvert who shied away from promoting myself. Diane understood. She wanted me to feel comfortable. She was caring and sweet. She thought my kind of innocence was endearing. Of course, I knew she was a great actress. As I got to know her, I found out she was also a great person with a lot of heart. She could genuinely have fun and enjoy life- such an admirable, enviable quality.
A brief sidenote: About three weeks before she offered me the role in Unstrung Heroes, Diane had an opportunity to direct a film called βPet Peopleβ for Steven Spielbergβs production company. Steven wanted me for the role about a dog magically turned into a man. Diane brought a ball to our meeting outside on a grassy area at Universal. She would throw it and I would chase it, running and jumping over bushes to fetch it. I would bring it back to her in my mouth and jump around and play like a dog. Diane laughed so hard while shooting it all.
She showed the footage to Spielberg and they both wanted me for the part. They wouldnβt make the movie without me. I had some doubts about the script and talked myself right out of the picture. I passed on it. One of my great professional regrets. Diane would have pulled quite a performance out of me for sure. Oh, well. Iβm glad I got to make her laugh, though. And what a laugh!
