I don’t write much art music these days (at least not as much as I’d like), but every once in a while I’m listening to Hovhaness or Sibelius and there is an itch to write a concert piece or two, and sometimes I actually give in. I’ve also been non-stop binging the score from ‘The Village’ for the last three years and become mildly obsessed with the idea of writing somewhat rustic, autumnally flavoured music. While my original ambitions were more orchestral (and that concept is still waiting to be realized), I’ve decided to go in a simpler direction first.
‘Patterns of Autumn’ is a short songbook of six autumnal pieces for violin, guitar, and piano, built around repeating and continuously evolving patterns. Each piece is based on an autumnal scene, with two pieces dedicated to each of the autumn months. Score videos are coming to my YouTube channel from next Friday to Sunday—link in bio!
