Drowning is preventable — and together, we can bring that number to zero.
Today, Miami-Dade County joined community leaders and partners during National Water Safety Month to announce the expansion of the award-winning Zero Drownings Miami-Dade initiative.
Through a collaborative partnership between The Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the American Red Cross South Florida Region, The Miami Foundation, United Way Miami, and additional community and philanthropic partners, the initiative is expanding access to FREE swim lessons and water safety education for children and families across Miami-Dade County.
With new support from Bloomberg Philanthropies and Griffin Catalyst, the program will continue scaling its life-saving impact countywide.
Since launching in 2024, Zero Drownings Miami-Dade has:
🏊 Served more than 5,100 children
🏊 Helped children achieve more than 30,000 swim safety skills
🏊 Partnered with 130 schools and childcare centers
🏊 Expanded programming across 25 pool locations

From leading the safe evacuation of over 2,000 guests and staff during critical emergencies to stepping up in a supervisor’s absence, Cody demonstrated calm, clear communication and exceptional leadership under pressure. His commitment to inclusiveness and teamwork ensured safety while reducing panic and anxiety.
🏆 Supervisor of the Quarter – Hugo Velasquez
Hugo’s innovative approach to facility design balances beauty, functionality, and cost-efficiency. Through mentorship and forward-thinking solutions, he’s strengthened his team while promoting sustainability, accessibility, and inclusive design across projects.
🏆 Team of the Quarter – Southeast Area Team
This team went above and beyond—enhancing park conditions, supporting over 500 games, and improving efficiency with tools like the Tiny Robot Painter across 30+ fields. Their efforts boosted park usage and revenue while maintaining high service levels despite staffing challenges.
🏆 Volunteer of the Quarter – JQ Foundation
Through impactful service initiatives, JQ Foundation mobilized 279 volunteers across 15 service days—removing debris, planting greenery, and contributing over 581 hours of service. Their dedication continues to strengthen community pride and park stewardship.
