[Peregrine falcon 遊隼] #biomagnification During World War II, DDT, an incredibly potent pesticide, was widely used. Unfortunately, it took years for people to understand that DDT was harmful to a wide range of ecologically significant animal species. Birds at the top of the food chain, such as the peregrine falcon, were particularly vulnerable to DDT poisoning. With the effect of biomagnification, the peregrine’s body began to absorb and accumulate the poison when it ate other birds that had been exposed to DDT-contaminated crops, insects, and fish (pic 2). The peregrine went endangered as a result of this. Fortunately, Two years after the peregrine falcon was declared endangered, the United States banned DDT in 1972. With the effort of captive breeding and reintroduction programs, the peregrine was then declassified as a federally endangered species in 1999 #peregrinefalcon #peregrine #peregrinefalcons #遊隼 Copic on Winsor & Newton watercolour paper 300gsm DM for commissions | 歡迎IG私訊訂製 #wildlifeillustration #natureartist #wildlifeart #wildlifewatercolor #animalartist #artistsketchbook #artistsketch #natureillustration #finelineartist #birdillustration #birdillustrations #petillustration #petillustrations #寵物繪圖 #動物写真 #鳥写真 #鳥 #手繪 #手繪插畫 #插画 #插畫 #素描 #素描練習

[Jaguar 美洲豹 (Panthera onca)] Jaguars and leopards both have golden coats with rosettes, but their patterns and builds set them apart. Jaguars have larger rosettes that often contain a central spot, and a stockier, muscular body. Leopards, in contrast, have smaller, denser rosettes without central spots and a more slender frame. Jaguars live in the Americas, from Mexico through Central America to the Amazon Basin, while leopards range widely across Africa and parts of Asia. Copic & Winsor and Newton promarkers on Winsor and Newton watercolour paper 180gsm @copic.hongkong @copic_official @winsorandnewton @winsorandnewton.hk #jaguar #jaguars #pantheraonca #panthera #bigcatsofinstagram #felines #felinesofinstagram

Nature’s underwater sunset! 🌅 These vibrant reef fish live in harems where one dominant male rules—if he disappears, the biggest female can transform into a male within weeks 🐠 Talk about a real-life plot twist in the coral reefs! Have you spotted these glowing swimmers while diving in Hong Kong waters? 🤿 [Sea Goldie 絲鰭擬花鮨 (Pseudanthias squamipinnis)] Copic & Winsor and Newton promarkers on Winsor and Newton watercolour paper 180gsm @copic.hongkong @copic_official @winsorandnewton @winsorandnewton.hk #wildlife #ocean #reeflife #marinebiology #hongkongdiving

[Yellow-crested Cockatoo 小葵花鳳頭鸚鵡 (Cacatua sulphurea)] The Yellow-crested Cockatoo is Critically Endangered, mainly because of illegal trapping for the pet trade and habitat loss in its native range in Indonesia and East Timor. In Hong Kong, however, a wild introduced population became well established, especially in urban parks and tree-lined areas on Hong Kong Island, making the city an important refuge for the species. Copic & Winsor and Newton promarkers on Winsor and Newton watercolour paper 180gsm @copic.hongkong @copic_official @winsorandnewton @winsorandnewton.hk

[Humpback Grouper 老鼠斑 (Cromileptes altivelis)] The Humpback Grouper is a striking reef fish that exhibits protogynous hermaphroditism (雌性先熟雌雄同體), meaning all individuals start life as females and may later change into males. In many groupers, this shift is triggered by social cues: when a dominant male disappears, the largest, most mature female in the group begins to transform, altering its gonads, hormones, and often body colour to take on a male role. Protogynous hermaphroditism is relatively common in marine fishes, especially in reef‑dwelling families like the groupers (Serranidae). This strategy boosts reproductive success by ensuring that large, experienced fish act as males, while younger or smaller fish first reproduce as females, maximising the number of eggs the population can produce over time. Protogynous hermaphroditism also helps these reef fish adapt when big males are lost, keeping mating groups functional and giving the population a better chance to recover even in heavily fished or fragmented habitats. I’ve been meaning to draw this for a while, but I never found the right reference—until I photographed this little guy on my recent hike at Lau Shui Heung! [Hong Kong Newt 香港瘰螈 (Paramesotriton hongkongensis)] The Hong Kong Newt is a salamander found in Hong Kong and adjacent coastal parts of Guangdong, once thought to be endemic to Hong Kong and named accordingly. Its underside is orange and black, a classic warning pattern that signals its toxicity to potential predators. During the breeding season, adults migrate from forest streams to shallow rock pools and roadside ponds, often crossing busy roads in the process; this leads to frequent roadkill and is now a major conservation threat to this near‑threatened species. Copic & Winsor and Newton promarkers on Winsor and Newton watercolour paper 180gsm @copic.hongkong @copic_official @winsorandnewton @winsorandnewton.hk #hongkongnewt #newts

Bluestripe snapper 四線笛鯛 (Lutjanus kasmira) & Five‑lined snapper 五線笛鯛(Lutjanus quinquelineatus) Bluestripe and Five‑lined snappers are bright yellow reef fish with blue horizontal stripes—four on the former, usually five on the latter—both often seen in schools. Like many reef fish, they may form mixed‑species schools, where several similar species swim together for better protection and feeding opportunities, especially in shared reef habitats. African Lion 非洲獅(Panthera leo)] The African lion, famously portrayed in films like “The Lion King” and “The Chronicles of Narnia”, start life with a sandy coat covered in spots and faint rosettes that help them blend into the dry grasses and dappled light of the savanna. This juvenile coat makes it easier for them to stay hidden while adults hunt or when predators and rival carnivores pass nearby. Unlike most cat species, which are solitary, lions are highly social and live in prides, and this cooperative lifestyle gives cubs extra protection, shared nursing from related females, and more adults to learn hunting and social skills from as they grow. [Long-fin Bannerfish 白吻雙帶立旗鯛/ 馬夫魚(Heniochus acuminatus)] The Long-fin Bannerfish looks very similar to the Moorish Idol, with tall white dorsal streamers and bold black-and-white bands, but this is a case of convergent evolution rather than close kinship. The bannerfish is a butterflyfish in the family Chaetodontidae, while the Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus) is the only living member of the family Zanclidae, and both occur on Indo-Pacific reefs, including those around Hong Kong. You can tell them apart by the bannerfish’s white face, shorter snout, and yellow rear dorsal and tail fins, compared with the Moorish Idol’s longer tube-like snout and mostly black tail edged in white. [Giant Anteater 大食蟻獸 (Myrmecophaga tridactyla)] The Giant Anteater is the largest living anteater, found in grasslands, wetlands, and forests of Central and South America. Its powerful forelimbs and long claws rip open nests, while an elongated snout and sticky tongue let it quickly lap up thousands of insects without using teeth.
