Throwing it back to a meaningful project that continues to make an impact in our community. MHP is proud to have served as the Structural Engineer on the 80,000-square-foot, four-story Cherese Mari Laulhere Children’s Village for MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach. The project was delivered through a collaborative design-build effort with Turner Construction Company and c|a architects. Bringing together more than 35 pediatric specialty clinics, the Village was designed to give families access to comprehensive care in one convenient location. The LEED Gold facility prioritizes both sustainability and wellness, with a light-filled, multi-story lobby and full-height windows that draw natural daylight deep into the clinical spaces. Healing extends beyond the interior as well, with age-specific rehab therapy gyms opening to a shaded outdoor yard, creating opportunities for care in fresh air and natural light. The project was shaped by a highly collaborative process, leveraging lean strategies such as pull planning, big room coordination, and full-scale mockups of nearly every treatment space, all carried out within a 30,000-square-foot outdoor tent to fine-tune design and functionality. MHP’s scope included the core and shell, exterior façade, MEP anchorage, and key shared spaces, along with tenant improvements for physician offices, clinic modules, imaging, pharmacy, and lab areas. We are grateful to have contributed to a project dedicated to advancing pediatric and women’s healthcare. #ThrowbackThursday #HealthcareDesign #StructuralEngineering #DesignBuild #LongBeach #MakingBuildingsSafe

MHP would like to congratulate our longstanding client, @nasajpl , on the launch of Artemis II. Artemis II marks a historic milestone as the first U.S. mission in over 50 years to send astronauts around the moon. While not a landing mission, it will carry humans farther from Earth than ever before. JPL’s Deep Space Network (DSN) plays a critical role in the mission, enabling communication with the spacecraft through three massive antenna systems strategically located around the globe—Goldstone (near Barstow, CA), Madrid, Spain, and Canberra, Australia. MHP has proudly partnered with JPL since 2002 as Campus Engineer, completing more than 200 projects spanning a wide range of structural challenges. Our work includes seismic evaluations of nine key facilities, structural engineering support for the renovation of the 70-meter Goldstone antenna (pictured below), the Mars Rover Touchdown Testing Structure, and replacement of the space simulator chamber hoist. In addition to these major efforts, MHP continues to support JPL with thoughtful, reliable structural solutions for numerous essential facility projects. #mhpse #nasa #jpl #artemis #makingbuildingssafe

This #ThrowbackThursday, we’re highlighting a recent project close to home, the College of Professional and Continuing Education (CPaCE) building at California State University, Long Beach, a valued neighbor and long-standing client of MHP. The brand new three-story, 34,000-square-foot facility was developed to serve as a central gathering place for learning, collaboration, and events. This project was led by MHP Principal Lance Kenyon, M.S., S.E., and Associate/Project Manager Daniel Fox, S.E. Working alongside ZGF Architects and MATT Construction, MHP helped bring the vision to life through a collaborative design-build approach. The building features flexible classroom environments, collaboration spaces, and a conference facility designed to accommodate up to 240 occupants. Operable partitions allow the conference space to transform into three smaller rooms, supporting a variety of campus programs and events. Additional amenities on the first floor include a catering kitchen, student vending area, lobby, elevators, and restrooms, with classrooms and support spaces located on the upper levels. To balance structural efficiency with architectural goals, MHP evaluated several lateral systems before selecting buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs). The design also addresses site liquefaction concerns through a slab-on-grade supported by auger-cast deep pile foundations. Designed with sustainability in mind, the building incorporates natural ventilation, radiant heating and cooling, and other energy-efficient strategies. The project ultimately became the first Net-Zero Energy classroom building within the CSU system and earned LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. #mhpse #csulb #cpace #sustainability #longbeach
