Hi, I'm MJ. The lead cinematographer and a creative director @notjustmedia.ca
Ever since I was a child, I've been drawn to the world of art. I was always that kid in class with the wild imagination, always experimenting with new techniques and mediums. My art teacher in high school recognized my talents and encouraged me to explore my creative side even further. My classmates knew me as the one who always had the most innovative and story-driven projects.
As I grew older, I discovered a passion for video and cinematography. The ability to tell stories through moving images was like a dream come true. I knew that this was what I wanted to do with my life. I studied film, took courses and honed my skills overtime.
Now, as a professional cinematographer/video producer and overall creative, I bring that same passion and creativity to everything I do. I enjoy telling stories that captivate audiences and leave lasting impressions. I'm always looking for new and innovative ways to communicate ideas, and I'm constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible.

Over the last couple years in my career producing music video these are my frameworks I live and stand by for what I consider my key pillars for a successful music video.
- the emotion the artist needs to carry through in their performance takes. The more grounded the emotion feels to what the viewer watches the better the viewing experience will be.
- if it's a video where there are real world intrsuments you can hear and you want to put the artist playing one of the intrsuments, it's best to use an instrument most grounded to the music. If an acoustic guitar drives the undertones, it makes no sense having the artist play a piano for the entirity of their performance take, especially if you're on a budget and that's the only scene.
- always try to visually connect what the viewers are listening to, to what they watch on screen. If they hear drums, they should see drums match to the playing etc.
- the only instance the above listed can be overlooked is if its a story element where characters are doing something completely different than performing to the song. This works quite well to keep viewers engaged.

It's never about just rolling the camera to create the final look. It's everything prior.
The choice of location, the color pallet of the brand, the composition, framing etc. All important things done in preproduction even before the camera hits record.
My philosophy and approach to grading is really to compliment the decisions that have already been made at preproduction. Those choices/decisions were not mistakes so why create something out of thin air? Plus it's way more time efficient less stressful 🙂
