A Palestinian butcher working at an Israeli supermarket sets out to prove his innocence after being
accused of tearing down Israeli hostage posters in the break room.
Welcome to the ff slate to the 27-min Oscar-nominated drama BUTCHER’S STAIN from director Mayer Levinson-Blount. FF’s Mark Brennan says: “It’s a beautifully told story that explores the deeply polarising effect the situation in Palestine/Israel is having on co-workers, friends, neighbours, and how it behoves everyone to dig a little deeper into their entrenched views.”

🇫🇷 Two People Exchanging Saliva
@tau.filmschool@academy_awards@meyerlbfilms@misiafilms

The Butcher’s Stain is about Samir (Omar Sameer Mahamid), an Arab Israeli working in a supermarket in Tel Aviv, who is accused of tearing down hostage posters in the break room.

A major achievement for the Steve Tisch School of Film and Television at Tel Aviv University: The Butcher’s Stain, directed by TAU student Meyer Levinson-Blount, has been nominated for an Academy Award.
The nomination was announced as part of the official shortlist for the 98th Academy Awards ceremony, to be held on 15th March in Los Angeles. The Butcher’s Stain is competing in the Best Live Action Short category, selected as one of only five films worldwide.
The 26-minute film was written and directed by Levinson-Blount and produced by Oron Kaspi, both fourth-year students at the Steve Tisch School of Film and Television. Inspired by the director’s personal experience working in a Tel Aviv supermarket, the film tells the story of Samir (Omer Samir), an Arab butcher falsely accused of tearing down hostage posters at his workplace, and his journey to prove his innocence. The film explores themes of suspicion, racism, and social complexity in Israel after October 7, through a human and sensitive lens.
Meyer Levinson-Blount immigrated to Israel from the United States about a decade ago. This is his first short film, created as part of his studies in the Production Track at the Steve Tisch School of Film and Television.
The Academy Award nomination follows the film’s Silver Award (second place) win in the Narrative category at the 2025 Student Academy Awards, where it was the only Israeli film recognized in that category.

INTERVIEW | Sometimes the most powerful stories are the ones that refuse to give easy answers.
In our conversation, 'Butcher's Stain's director Meyer Levinson-Blount spoke about exploring everyday racism through the quiet struggles of Samir, not as a symbol, but as a real person caught in circumstances he never asked for. Instead of delivering a clear “message,” the film builds suspicion and then challenges it, reminding us how often our assumptions about others can be completely baseless.
It’s a thoughtful reflection on identity, belonging, and the way social narratives shape how we see each other.
Watch the full conversation to hear Meyer break down why he wanted the film to end with a question rather than an answer.

This year, the Oscars’ Live-Action Short Film category feels bigger than ever — not because of scale, but because of impact. 🎬
In a world dominated by franchises and spectacle, these short films prove that powerful storytelling doesn’t need three hours or massive budgets. Each nominee dives straight into the heart of what it means to live today, exploring connection, identity, politics, belonging, satire, and the uncomfortable truths we often avoid.
From stories about strangers finding unexpected community, to bold commentaries on intimacy and control, to deeply personal explorations of visibility and moral consequence — these films remind us why cinema exists in the first place: to make us feel, question, and reflect.
Nominees:
The Singers
Two People Exchanging Saliva
Jane Austen's Period Drama
Butcher's Stain
A Friend of Dorothy
