Lion of China
During the stint of Mayor Joel Martinez, at attempt was made to re-brand Charlotte Street to China Town. At this time, Chinese-style lanterns were strung across some intersections, welcome arches were installed, as well as lion statues (石獅; shíshī) such as the one pictured behind a local fruit vendor’s stall.
This may be a female lion, holding a supine cub in place under one of her paws. (Traditionally, a male 石獅 would be depicted with a ball under-foot.)
