❁ "Creatures of the Deep" is a documentary film born with the purpose of immersing us in the origins, life, and artistic process of Cuban painter José Capaz, achieved through the management of his solo show, INMINENCIA, at the Mestre Projects gallery in the Bahamas.
We are deeply grateful to José Capaz for giving us the opportunity to delve into his life, for allowing us to capture the beauty of Regla (the municipality where he was born), and for opening the doors to his studio and his creative process during the six months of filming.
To José Mestre and his family, our deepest gratitude for the trust placed in us, for taking the documentary project all the way to completion (the staging of the exhibition at the Bahamian gallery), and also for the warm welcome into their home.
The documentary is currently being screened at José Capaz's Open Studio: "Bending Time (My Past Is Here)" as part of his artistic residency at the Cuban Artists Fund Studio @cubanartistsfund , New York.
We hope that it can soon be exhibited in Cuba ❁

Happy Birthday to the great Stan Burnside @cultural.guru
One of the true masters of Bahamian art, a legend whose work captures the spirit, culture, and soul of our islands. Stan isn’t just an artist; he’s history in motion, a storyteller through color and canvas.
Generations of young and up-and-coming artists look up to him for inspiration, guidance, and creative courage. Your legacy continues to shape the art scene and remind us all of the beauty of the Bahamian culture.
Wishing you health, happiness, and continued success in everything you do. 🇧🇸
In a world that feels increasingly unsteady, Jose Capaz captures the storm we’re all navigating. Fire above, waves below—chaos crashing into color. His art reminds us that even in turmoil, there’s movement, emotion, and the possibility of beauty through resistance.”
“I don’t paint what I see—I paint what we’re all trying to survive.” – Jose Capaz @jose_capaz@mestreprojects@residencyunlimited@rockefellercenter

“Inminencia” explores the vast, untamed spaces that exist both within us and beyond—between memory and forgetting, the deep ocean and outer space, and the industrial and the organic. Raised in Havana, Cuba, Capaz creates large-scale, immersive works that hover between chaos and contemplation, material and spirit. His paintings don’t just depict landscapes; they plunge into the feeling of being on the edge of something immense, something unknown…

“Inminencia”
The process of creating this work has been a very enriching experience for me, as it has
allowed me to reconnect with past experiences. The work is presented as a study of space and
depths, explored in a fantastic way. Through my mind and my memory, I recount these events.
The characters I have created represent different phases of inhabiting that void, that feeling of
ataraxia. For me, the human figure encapsulates my own experience in that imagined space. Each
phase reflects an aspect of my experience.

Mestre Projects is pleased to announce ‘INMINENCIA, a solo exhibition of new works by Cuban Artist José Capaz, Saturday, March 8th, from 5-8pm.
Join us in celebrating his first solo exhibition at Mestre Projects in The Bahamas. Capaz’s work is deeply self-referential, immersing us in an illusory void where personal experience drifts between reality and abstraction.

José graduated from the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts (2010) and attended the University of the Arts, ISA (Instituto Superior de Arte) in Havana between 2011 and 2015.
