According to Shandra Woworuntu, many victims never feel trapped at the beginning. They feel chosen. They believe they are stepping into a better future. That is how trafficking now starts.
From a Job Promise to Enslavement
Shandra arrived in the United States as a professional woman seeking stability and dignity after Indonesia’s 1998 economic crisis. What she entered instead was a structured, transnational trafficking network. Manipulation followed opportunity. Threats replaced assurances. What appeared to be legitimate employment became sexual enslavement.
Her passport was confiscated. Her movements were controlled. Resistance was met with intimidation—at times reinforced with a gun. She was forced into sexual exploitation and told she owed a “debt” that could only be repaid through continued abuse. This was not merely physical violence; it was the systematic erasure of autonomy and personhood.
