Sometimes a weekend lasts a lifetime 💚🔨🌲🪴🌎
Last month, folks joined us in Portland, Oregon for an impactful, justice-centered retreat with @tivnu where we:
👂heard from resident Scott about the Dignity Village’s history and inner workings for folks seeking shelter
❤️🩹discussed the intersection of environmentalism, housing justice, and community care
🐔helped feed goats and build chicken coops & Cat-io’s/tiny house decks for residents @hazelnutgrove
🌿weeded some of the community farms with Kindness Farms
🍽️ shared a meal with the residents of City Teams and heard about their stories and work with the organization
We are excited for future collaborations with Tivnu and Mem Global! 💚

**Lilith: queen of the night with special quest Rabbi Yael** Lilith is a feminine figure in Mesopotamian and Jewish mythology, based on Jewish folklore she is said to have fled from the garden of eden because she did not want to submit to adam … yes, adam had another before eve …
Although she is not mentioned in the Torah, her name is derived from a single word mentioned in Isiah, Lilit .. meaning (maybe) night bird/screecher owl/ night hag/ vampire. First appearing in Jewish sources from 500AD, she is a demon, semen thief, and preyed on pregnant women embodying the fears of man/womenkind … and for some, a feminist icon, refusing to be pinned down to a single identity or less than a man.
Lilith appears on incantation bowls and amulets containing protective spells meant to ward her off. She was believed to have the power to transform a women’s physical features, seduce her husband and conceive a child … only for it to look unlike its father so that it would be shunned for being conceived outside of marriage.
Lilith breaks boundaries and binaries; good and evil, this world and the next, feminist and demon … and Havdalah reinforces boundaries between shabbat and the rest of the week. We chose to honour this, making our own Havdalah sets, reflecting on when boundaries must be upheld and when they must come crumbling down …
It *is* that serious. What’s more important than building Jewish community?! Nothing! ✨
