Introducing "Saigon Beat Collective" @saigonbeatcollective Last year I moved from Tokyo to Saigon, Vietnam. It's still hard to find a place where I can enjoy the beat music. So I thought, if it doesn’t exist, I’ll create it—I’m not sure if it was already there and I just hadn’t found it yet—That’s why I decided to start "Saigon Beat Collective" Since coming here, I've met some local beatmakers and producers, their music was seriously dope. There is a unique Vietnamese sense of style they bring, probably shaped by the culture and sounds they grew up with. That difference was fascinating and inspiring to me. If we could share knowledge about beatmaking and gear, maybe more beatmakers would emerge. I wanna meet people who can inspire each other, grow together, and build a community vibe. I've had homies in Japan for over 10 years. They’ve become irreplaceable in my life. I met them through a community, events, and clubs. Even when I went abroad I got to meet beatmakers simply because we were all beatmakers. Being a beatmaker gives you instant connections all around the world. If we can build a solid scene here in Saigon, it could become a welcoming hub for beatmakers visiting from overseas. They could share their knowledge, culture, and techniques—and in return, Vietnamese beatmakers could also connect with the world and showcase their talent globally. I’m Japanese, so maybe I’m not the right person to be the one to start it here. But exactly because I’m connected to Japan’s community, I hope I can become a bridge between Vietnam and Japan. Even in Japan, it’s taken years for the beat scene to take shape. And honestly I'm not sure how long I’ll be here so I know it won’t be easy. …But that said, I think it’s fine to begin with small things—whatever is possible right now. For example, just 2–3 people making beats together at a cafe, trying a small weekend event, visiting record stores together, and so on. If you feel something from this—even just a little—I’d love your support or ideas. Từ những set live đầy cảm hứng, những workflow cực dị từ các beatmaker, cho tới những cuộc trò chuyện rất thật xoay quanh cách mỗi người sử dụng SP-404 – tất cả đã tạo nên một cộng đồng nhỏ nhưng đầy năng lượng. Đặc biệt, cảm ơn Shirato-san đã mang đến góc nhìn rất riêng về SP-404 – không chỉ là một thiết bị, mà là một cách để kể câu chuyện âm nhạc theo cách của riêng mình. We’re hosting an event for beatmakers: “Roland Beatmakers Day” 🎧 ============================== 📅 Saturday, March 14 🕖 Event starts 7:00 PM / After party 8:30 PM 📍 Neo @neo.hbt 393/7 Hai Bà Trưng ============================== This event is a collaboration between Roland × Swee Lee × Saigon Beat Collective, and Mr. Shirato @takeo_shirato , who is the developer of the SP-404MKII, will be coming back to Vietnam for the first time in about a year 🙌 The SP-404 is a legendary sampler that has been loved by beatmakers all over the world for many years. However, in Vietnam there are still very few opportunities to actually try one in person. At this event, you’ll be able to get hands-on with the SP-404MKII, and even hear tips and ideas directly from the developer. Beatmakers will also gather to perform their original beats live, and it will be a space where people can connect, share knowledge, and talk about the music they love. It will truly be a full day dedicated to beatmakers. Personally, I hope to see more beatmakers in Vietnam. That’s why I founded Saigon Beat Collective. I’d like to see more clubs and bars where people can listen to beats, and build a community where we can share knowledge about production and gear, and create music together. Many of my favorite beatmakers are based in places like Germany and LA, but I’m also really curious to hear the beats being made by people here in Vietnam. And hopefully one day, we’ll see beatmakers from Vietnam making their mark on the global scene. Some beatmakers will also be joining us from overseas for this event. I’d like for us to slowly build the beat scene in Vietnam together. Beatmakers are of course welcome, but so is anyone who wants to try making beats or start producing music. Active in Tokyo until 2024, then relocated to Saigon in September of the same year. She founded the beatmaker community “Saigon Beat Collective” and organizes events, sessions, and workshops for beatmakers, also organized this event. Using gear such as the SP404SX and OP-1, she creates genre-blending music with a focus on lofi and chill beats. Her past releases include contributions to compilation albums from labels in Mexico and the Canadian label Inner Ocean Records.
