Today, I’m sharing a piece of my family’s history. The 7-month prayer has always been a deeply rooted tradition for us, where we come together to offer prayers to the deities and spirits.
As part of the younger generation, I used to struggle to understand the meaning behind these rituals. For over 20 years, I simply followed along. What seemed to be ‘yet another family tradition’ for the second generation held profound meaning for those who walked through it.
As we dug further with the ‘why’, I came to understand the values of respect and devotion through the story time by my ahma and uncles.
This year marks the last time our family will hold this ritual. With age catching up and different a way of life, they have decided to round it up. Letting go of something that has been part of their lives for more than 40 years is not easy, but their decision shows not just their thoughtfulness towards the younger generation, but also their art of detachment. For that, I have deep respect for my family.
I’m grateful to have experienced these moments as part of a family member, and even more so to have documented it, for the very last time.
