Dreamy Cookie Cream Tart in Castro Valley 🦋@alwaysyoursbakerycafe I preordered a “MOM” Cookie Cream Tart for our Mother’s Day celebration. The owner replied super quickly and still tried her best to fit my order in even though they were already fully booked, which I really appreciated. Now back to the tart itself. The soft pink color, edible pearls, and butterfly decorations made it look absolutely adorable and extra special for Mother’s Day. I honestly thought I was mostly paying for the looks, but it actually turned out to be so delicious too. When I went to pick it up, I also noticed they have indoor dining and boba drinks available. Michelin Bib Gourmand Spot in San Leandro 😋 @tophatterskitchen How lucky to find two standout restaurants in San Leandro back to back and this one even carries a Michelin Bib Gourmand. I went in expecting Californian cuisine, yet it actually blends Vietnamese influences. The fusion really lifts the flavors and makes it feel unique, not something you easily find elsewhere. Everything we ordered was delicious and beautifully presented. I’ve seen mixed comments about the service, but maybe because we went on a weekday, it felt warm and welcoming. The only downside was that the cocktails were a bit steep, so I went with white wine instead. Def a Hidden Gem in San Leandro 💎 @tsuru.sushi I thought it was just a random local sushi spot, but it turned out to be a true hidden gem! The sushi is incredibly fresh and good value. No wonder it’s been around for over 27 years. Each order of sushi comes with 2 pieces and is under $9, except for items with market price. We got the uni nigiri for only $15.95, which IMO is honestly a steal. And it tastes so good. Btw the miso soup was just $2 😆 That complimentary fruit is a nice touch too. Must-try Bakery in San Francisco 🥐 @tartinebakery One of the most famous bakeries in SF and I’m finally here! They’ve got a few locations, but people say the OG one does it best. The sourdough and pastries are sooo good but the coffee didn’t really hit. Guess you can’t have it all 🤪 The tarts were my favorite. Coconut cream is light on coconut but the chocolate crust really lifted it. The lemon one is super refreshing without being overly sour. Libby’s Water Tower in Sunnyvale 🍑 Went to Sunnyvale for brunch and discovered this giant can of fruit cocktail. It’s the water tower from Libby, McNeill & Libby, once the largest cannery in the world back in 1922. This water tower is kinda randomly sitting in the middle of a grassy office park, which turns out to be the original factory site. It’s actually really nice for a walk. The factory closed in 1985, but the water tower stayed and was repainted to look like the original 1935 fruit cocktail label, and is now a historical landmark. New Japanese Market in Emeryville 🇯🇵 @tokyo.central So happy to finally have a big new Japanese grocery store near me! I used to shop there all the time when I was in Hong Kong. Prices are definitely higher here, but I was still thrilled to see the iconic penguin 🐧 There was no line on Friday afternoon, but a lot of items were already sold out. That’s understandable since everyone rushed to the new spot and and restocking couldn’t keep up. Festive Italian Eatery in San Francisco 🍝 @valenciabottega Met my girlfriend here and really enjoyed the Christmas decorations, elegant plates, and fancy drinks. The Calamari Fritti is a classic. It’s crispy, not oily, and the portion is generous. The pasta was a little less than what I expected though. Especially the lobster ravioli, the tomato sauce felt a bit strong, so the lobster flavor didn’t really come through. Not sure if it’s because we came in the afternoon when things felt a bit quieter, but our server was very attentive. Hand-pulled Noodles in San Leandro 🍜 @daoartisannoodle The noodles here are hand-pulled, and the xiao long bao are made to order. You can even watch them being made through the glass! The noodles have that nice chewy bite I love. We tried the Clear Broth Beef Noodle Soup and the Spicy & Sour Beef Noodle Soup. The clear broth one’s a bit plain, but the spicy & sour totally wakes up your appetite. The xiao long bao were a highlight. So juicy with thin, delicate skin. The Shanghai Pan-Fried Soup Buns were also filled with soup! And those Lychee Shrimp Balls really look like lychees, so cute! So many small plates still tempting us.
