BLURB:

REVIEW:
Meg Shaffer has another standout here folks, perfect for fans of stories about stories. This has magical realism, mystery, & a romance subplot—but at its core, it’s really a story about why books matter! The idea of “Book Witches,” responsible for maintaining fictional worlds by jumping into books to save them from threats feels fresh & highly imaginative. And the tropes—portal fantasy, book within a book, forbidden romance, found family, magical object, chosen one, reluctant hero, & fictional characters crossing into reality—don’t they all sound amazing?!
Rainy is wonderful to follow. She’s clever, observant, self-aware, & someone trying to belong. Right off the bat, she states the rules Book Witches live by & how her powers work, making everything easy to follow. Her magical familiar cat, Koshka, is always with her & such a delight!
Her and the “Duke of Chicago” have one mishap after another as they embark on her quest, jumping into literary classics like Alice In Wonderland & Nancy Drew. Rainy’s magical umbrella allows her to move between worlds, and it gives the book a whimsical feel reminiscent of Mary Poppins.
The “book within a book” concept becomes more complex as the story unfolds, and there’s a slow reveal about family secrets. Don’t attempt to predict what unfolds because it really does feel like falling down a rabbit hole & not knowing where you’re going to land! The final chapter suddenly shifts POV in a clever twist & leaves readers wondering what’s real!
If you enjoy imaginative fantasy, metafiction, book-within-a-book narratives, or whimsical plots with mystery and romance, then this is one you’ll want to pick up!
