For all my devotion to elasticated waistbands, I’ve somehow not made myself a pair of elastic waist shorts… until yesterday. 🙃 My two pairs of memade button-fly jean shorts are getting less and less comfortable each year, as my body changes and my tolerance for hard pants wanes (esp. in hot months), and I have little motivation to sew a size up to replace them. Suffice to say, I’m so dang thrilled to have this new pair, and with ease at the waistband too! I used some 8 oz. Cotton canvas that I painted blue, and made a shorts variation on my favorite pair of #selfdrafted pants. The most significant feature to me is the facing at the hem, to achieve the outside curve in the leg opening. This shape feels kinda sporty and kinda retro, and I absolutely love the detail. It’s Day Nine of #memademay2023 and it’s my first chance to wear these dreamy #clowncore rainbow pants! These are #selfdrafted and made from a few precious yards of a handwoven fabric that I designed for @slowgoods.studio . The feel of the rainbow plaid was inspired by a rug designed by Hella Jongerius that, as soon as I laid eyes on it, I wanted to wrap myself up in 🤗 (swipe for rug detail). I took this inspo, and developed my own color palette back in December in both paint, Pantone swatch and thread swatches (swipe for palette detail). I narrowed it down to 14 colors with 24 weft color repeat, and then collaborated with @anuprerna_atelier to commission 50 meters of this fabric in Khadi cotton, hand dyed and handwoven by their master artisans. I am currently using this fabric to produce garments for Slow Goods, and have no plans to sell it as cut yardage for the time being. But who knows what the future holds! Me and this whole creative business/studio thing is an ever-evolving work in progress. It's May! I have been so looking forward to this month, for warmer weather, for the #memademay inspiration, for the plants growing, and for an extra nudge to make a few #memades that I've backburnered for too long. I turned 40 this last year, started a small business, have been homeschooling my two kids and everyday feels like a big old mush pot with little distinction between life and work (ie: "is this creative thing I'm doing for me-personally, or for creative-business? Is bringing my kids to this small business banking meeting work? or is it homeschool" it goes on and on, and I am continually reminding my type-A brain that it's all of it all the time and that’s okay 💆🏻‍♀️). So I make few promises this month: I'll definitely be sharing a few work-ish projects, but they'll all be 100% meg-ish things too, because I don't know how to separate the two at the moment, and the time/energy involved in trying feels like a mis-use of those precious resources! I definitely want to make some Greta Dungarees (and I hope declaring it here keeps me accountable to finally making them), and a two piece set from some hand-painted fabric. At least that’s where my mind is at the moment. My featured me-made today is the most recent thing that I've made for myself: this #selfdrafted skirt with deep pockets, and an ever so slight A-line from waist to the ruffle. The ruffle is 1.5x the width of the main skirt. The print is one that I designed from some hand-painted wobbly paper cut-outs that I started developing last summer (see last three slides for some print development process: sketch, painted cut-outs, digital file), and still TBD whether I end up using it for work things or not -- I love the scale and sculptural forms of the print, but I have not settled on colors yet. The base fabric is a scrumptious Tencel/Linen blend. Worn with: + an Earth tee from @imogeneandwillie + the loveliest bag (gifted) from @joynbags thoughtfully made of repurposed production scraps! Made a little road-trip detour to visit @ewefibers and meet @jessamyb and touch some fabric (and yarn) after too many days away from my own home sewing space! ☀️ Jessamy and I were not coincidentally wearing our matching #bobpants in ‘Wes’ linen from @merchantandmills . 👯‍♀️😂🥰 It felt so good and grounding to connect with a long-admired IG sewing friend for the first time in real life, and chat a little about projects and work and small business and a little bit of life-stuff too. I came away with a couple of fun fabrics for me and projects for my kids, and got to meet @eliseheartwell too! 💗 I really could have spent so much more time just soaking in this cozy, bright little shop — it was a beautifully curated selection of fabrics (and yarn too), and I could have sat there for hours just making fabric/pattern pairings and plans. 💆🏻‍♀️ #sewinglove #memade #memadeeveryday #modernsewist #bobpantsarmy

This tiered linen dress - it may be the beginning of a season of #memade dresses. 🥰 It’s one of a few makes that I squeezed in before leaving on our road-trip last week. I used the #chamomilecrop as the base for the top, and adjusted the neckline a little bit to scoop more in front and widen toward my neck/center at the shoulder seam. The fabric is washed linen in color ‘Harvest’ from @blackbirdfabrics . I drafted big deep luxurious pockets. Each tier is 1.5x the opening above. We are leaving Vicksburg today headed toward Selma and then Montgomery, and while here we explored the national battlefield and stayed at this gorgeous old historic landmark bed and breakfast — @oakhallbnb . A few days into a three week road-trip with my kiddos, and I love the view of my packed bag! Mostly #memades and a few things from @slowgoods.studio of course, and one pair of altered #thrifted Levi’s. All together these garments make a color story that I’m really loving, feels like spring. And there are a few new projects that I squeezed in before taking off, too! We snuck some gardening prep in this weekend — snipped and pruned and cleaned out the old, and found all sorts of things growing already! Bee balm, sedums, poppy mallow, amsonia blue star, some potatoes and garlic that overwintered accidentally, and more. I wore my just finished #scoutscarf as a neckerchief/bandana, and my spouse joked that I had some Helen vibes - from All Creatures Great and Small (we’ve been watching devotedly lately). All of Helen’s farm workwear! The hand-knits, overalls and headscarves/bandanas! I’m a fan. I’m also wearing old rtw overalls (though I’m committed to finally making #gretadungarees for myself this Spring), a hand knit #nofrillssweater and gum boots from @merrypeople (gifted with no obligation to post). I’d usually wait until mid-March to plant anything, but there are all kinds of signs (unsettling they may be) of an early Spring, and my kids and I will be away on a road-school-trip for most of March, so we rolled the dice and popped some early spring veggies in the ground, hoping that when we return, the garden will be off to a solid start. Fingers crossed for no big snows or ice storms in March, though it would probably be better for us all if winter went a little longer. Either way, my spouse will be here to throw bedsheets over the garden beds to protect our plant bbs, if need be. 🌬️☀️🌱 #memade #handknits #gardenclothes
