We recently became the first Black same-sex couple to marry at London’s illustrious Middle Temple Church. The venue was grand. The food was grand. The music was grand. But the most unfathomable, breathtaking part of the day was the love and support you all wrapped us in.
There was a time when I couldn’t picture this moment, marrying the woman I love. I wondered who would show up. Who would see our love clearly, beyond the haze of their own beliefs. And truthfully, not everyone in our lives could meet our love with their own. There were moments when the rejection from people so close to me felt like it might break me. But even then, I knew it could never break the love I have for this spectacular woman.
I would marry you in front of no one just as quickly as I would marry you in front of the world. We choose never to hide behind shame. We choose never to let anyone else’s hatred penetrate the safe walls we’ve built. We choose each other. We choose love—again and again—until the end of time.
To our family and friends who showed up and showed out: if it weren’t for the love you’ve poured into us throughout our lives, we wouldn’t have had the courage or the tenacity to choose this love so boldly. Our love truly begins with yours. And just as we scrambled to find seats for all 170 of you, know this—there will always, always be a seat for you at our table.
