✨ Edition Launch: Gabriel Abrantes (@itsgabrielabrantes ) ✨
Launching alongside his exhibition at Gasworks, this limited edition expands on the ghost figures Gabriel has been developing over the past four years. It depicts an ethereal, floating ghost in a flooded room, pausing before bludgeoning a kneeling rat with an oversized mallet. A floating sheet that references art history, where curtains acted as a membrane between reality and myth, Gabriel’s ghosts allow him to signal towards broader existential themes relating to humanity including AI and societal collapse.
In contrast to the ghosts’ sincerity, his rats are more provocative. Ratzo (most recently in Rattrap, 2025) is an “internet-bred trickster” who oscillates between nihilism, passionate engagement, and playful mischief. Together, they point towards a future where art has disappeared, and algorithms endlessly fight with one another.
Gabriel Abrantes is Portuguese American artist and filmmaker based in Lisbon. His works confront historical, social and political themes, often layering improbable narratives with absurdity, folklore, and humour.
