I’m thrilled to share some new songs with you. We started this takeaways thing to be a fun place for me to put demos and live recordings. Today you get two new songs and two stripped versions of songs you know. Ben affleck was a tune I freestyled in January at the height of my pre-sobriety depression. Balance was a song I wrote with my old bestie and MB collaborator James Glaves. James and I have both struggled with our sobriety and mental health something fierce. We’ve written a thousand songs together but Balance is the first time we got in a room to collaborate in 5 years. It was so easy getting to the bottom of the song with him. We have a short hand and an unspoken knowing. Now medicated and sober and sitting together we remembered what we had and this song fell out quick. I’m so insanely proud of how it feels to be healthy and trying to mend fences rather than hiding in my drunk self hating bridge burning hipster bullshit. Balance is obvs about getting sober but also just about trying to love yourself and let the real you rock. I love my buddy and I’m honored to have his patience love and friendship. Life is wild and most of it is mid af. Which I’m really kinda coming around to. And yeah then we slapped on stick around and John and Lydia. Enjoy. Have a good holiday. This is it for me for a spell while me and the gang finish the album and plan for the next few years. I’ll be riding my bike and getting ice cream til next summer. C ya

Reverse was one of the first medium build songs ever made. In a smoky apartment in Norcross, Ga. The original is on bandcamp if you wanna dig. I remember it being the most proud of anything I had ever been.
Downtown Theater is maybe the most proud of anything I’ve ever done still. I hope it’s what I’ll be known for after I die.
Fat broke loser is what someone sounds like before they hit rock bottom. It’s a dark song but it’s honest. If you relate heavy to this one I hope you have good friends in your life to talk with!
Never told U was on the first ever medium build release (also on bandcamp) and it’s basically me trying to write a Paul McCartney ala Mac Demarco love song. I love playing this song. It’s an all timer for me. It’s inspired by an *NSYNC song “I thought she knew” which is literally the best song of all time behind mamma Mia by abba. Alaska!!! I’m coming up and playing some solo shows. Gonna try out yall on the new album before it comes out. I’m bringing my fave artists from last year to support the shows. It’s gonna be fun and silly and rowdy and emotional. A couple all age shows for the families and a 21+ for you dirty mofos. These are my only solo shows this year so maybe an opportunity for some people to travel and come see Alaska for the first time. Im fuggin so damn pumped to hang and talk shit with yall. 💓

I saw the members of @mumfordandsons at a Whole Foods in Atlanta in 2010. I was working the self checkout and I knew it was my shot but all I managed to say was “excited for the show tonight, lads!” . i used ‘lads’ so they could relax and feel at home. A little trick in the industry called a code switch! They were kind enough but that was the end of the conversation. No matter how I dreamed, I just wasn’t one of the sons. I went to their concert several hours later. It was a perfect show. The room was tingling. That was the last time me and the sons were ever in the same room. But now 16 years later we can try that Whole Foods meet up one more time. Me and my lads; Marcus and his sons. Together at last.
