On āthe use of uselessnessā: a Zhuangzi teaching.
āIf we make ourselves too useful, then we get used up.
Think about the trees out in nature that grow really straight and have very nice wood and look very healthy ā those are the trees that get cut down. Those are the trees that get turned into wood products because theyāre going to look nice and they're going to be effective.
But then, if you see this ugly gnarled tree that nobody wants to go near because there's going to be knots in the wood and you can't make some sort of nice board out of it, or you can't make floorboards⦠that's the tree that's going to survive. And that's the tree that's going to maintain its own inherent integrity.
And so, sometimes there's a value in thinking about that even in our own lives. You know, what are we losing when we're trying to be so productive and trying to be so useful? And what is it that we gain by taking a moment ā it doesn't have to be all the time ā but a moment to just sit there and say, okay, I'm going to be useless.
What's going on right now? Iām going to pay attention to birds that are singing. I'm going to pay attention to the way my breath feels in my body. Can I feel my pulse in my hands? Things like that. It seems so simple.
Maybe it doesn't seem useful at all. But at the end of the day, what are these other things that we think we have? You know, the social media profile, where everybody has an idea about who you are⦠is that really who you are? Is that more who you are than the feeling of your own heart beating?ā

The Florentines Pt. 2
Every day, I am more and more convinced of the power of art. Of the power of creativity. Of the way it can connect and move and ground people. Art as a form and art as a means. Goosebumps while reading a poem. Tears while watching a group of young people playing music for an unknown crowd. And couples sing and children become orchestra conductors. Laughter while watching grandparents dance with flirtatious eyes. Life can be both heavy and light. Beautiful and painful. And I am learning how to dance in this paradox, how to turn toward the lightness. Toward art.Ā
āØ
Feeling is a beautiful thing.Ā
