Paying more for your ride doesn’t mean drivers are earning more.
Passenger fuel surcharges on ride-hailing platforms have almost doubled to help drivers cope with rising costs, on top of a one-off S$200 cash payout from the government in April 2026.
For private-hire drivers like Norman Then, who drives a premium vehicle, higher fares and surcharges can help offset fuel costs. But drivers who charge less per trip, such as those using standard sedans, are hit harder because the same increases are not enough to make up for their lower fares.
