I loveddddd making this one! So much fun. We get to see Chicago Union Station, the Chicago Theater, Lake Shore Drive, and what is now known as the Henry Gerber House. I wanted to show a diverse lineup of Chicago’s best landmarks.
The font that I’ve been using for all of my text has disappeared 😭 I guess I’ll have to figure something else out now.
Henry Gerber is a hyperfixation of mine, and his story is 95% of why I wrote The Astrolabe. A few years ago I volunteered at The Gerber/Hart Library and Archives when I was doing research and my I was completely blown away by his story. The United States has such amazing LGBT history, so much of it unknown to the average person, and my aim with The Astrolabe Trilogy is to change that.

Chapter 25 starts out with an argument between Ruby and Karma about Nigel. Ruby thinks he’s a filthy traitor and that he got what he deserved by being betrayed by Malick and then getting blown up, whereas Karma views it differently. She can relate to his struggle in coping with the prejudice he faced from people in Mechanica City. I can see both sides. Being a mechanical or half-mechanized person in that city isn’t easy, and I can see how he was seduced by Malick. But, like…you can’t be trying to shoot people, you know?
So much research went into the look of 1925 Chicago, the disguises that Cole and the gang wear, as well as the speakeasy that they attempt to grab food from (Chicago historians will recognize it by it’s current name, The Green Door Tavern, which is the oldest surviving drinking establishment in the city!) I am exhausted. But it was so much fun! Ruby is giving Daisy Buchanan. Poor Karma, though 💀
After almost getting beat up by the infamous mobster Hymie Weiss, Brody is saved by a man with a German accent named Henry Gerber. Who is he and what does he want?
