In 2013 my wife and I saw Vampire Weekend down in Lewes. Before the gig we were in our tent getting ready. We were bang in the middle of IVF. I was supposed to administer the injections. But I couldn’t bring myself to stab her with enough force to get the needle in. I was constantly pulling back at the last second, thus scratching her skin. She had to do it herself. Every day for I don’t know how long. We watched the gig happy and sad, expectant and barely hopeful.
Last night we watched those same songs again. With three beautiful daughters at home, all conceived at the same time from that single round of IVF. We are so lucky. So lucky. Some people go through far bigger journeys to try and fulfill their familial dreams.
Last night we laughed and sang and cried and hugged.
What a show. They’re a band at the top of their game. Proper musicians. Thank you.
And there it goes out into the world. Since March 2023 we’ve been able to say very little. Now it’s done. The hope and expectation of what it can achieve and how it will be received. Now it’s done. It’s almost a flat feeling. Because your friend, your colleague, your neighbour, they all move on to the next project they’re excited about premiering. It’s history.
BUT GOD, WHAT A RIDE.
I enjoyed every single moment. What a group of people. From crew to creatives, it was a dream.
