It took me five weeks to fish this out of a box of college memories, a sheet of drawing paper signed and doodled on by members of the band Circulatory System, whose co-founder/leader/main brain Will Cullen Hart — he of the Olivia Tremor Control and Elephant 6 musical universe — died on Nov. 29.
I of course didn’t know him, but one time in college the band came to play; it was a fabulous show, and afterwards it turned out that the band members didn’t have a place to stay. They split up with their sleeping bags after stowing their instruments and bunked in a few students’ rooms, including mine. Will, and at least one other — I think Derek Almstead, but maybe also John Fernandes, who drew the little cello fellow — stayed with me on my dorm room floor, and we giggled like kids at a summer camp into the wee hours.
Will said encouraging things about a drawing project I had open on my desk and doodled on a loose piece of paper, shown here. In the morning he had the other band members sign before leaving, and besides being given the gift of a magical evening at a great show, I had proof that I had personally hosted a rock star for a night.
